About the Special Assets Team: Citi’s Special Assets team sits within the Banking & International Risk organisation and manages the firm’s most at-risk credit exposures across industries. The team focuses on stressed and distressed situations, providing strategic oversight and driving restructuring and remedial actions to maximise recovery value. Operating as part of the second line of defence, Special Assets provides independent review, challenge, and approval on high-risk credit decisions. The team also plays an early advisory role on emerging risks, setting account strategies and ensuring accurate risk ratings, regulatory classifications, and cost of credit (reserves) assessments.
What you’ll do:
- Lead the management of a portfolio of stressed and distressed credit exposures
- Define and implement account and exposure strategies
- Proactively manage evolving credit situations and workout processes
- Develop and execute restructuring and remedial strategies
- Drive portfolio recovery value while balancing stakeholder interests
- Partner with internal teams, clients, and external advisors to deliver solutions
- Provide risk oversight, challenge, and approvals in line with 2LoD responsibilities
- Ensure accurate and timely risk ratings, regulatory classifications, and cost of credit actions
- Provide strategic direction, transaction execution, and approval for Special Assets-managed credits
- Work with Special Assets Senior Transactors, valuation team members and banking in the management and execution of the Special Assets portfolio
- Recommendation and/or approval for credit decisions and certain work product involving the Special Assets portfolio
- Timely and proactive execution of portfolio management responsibilities, particularly recurring monitoring requirements
- Accountable for ensuring appropriate regulatory classifications, internal risk ratings and company/asset valuations are approved and reported accurately and on a timely basis, and are in compliance with policies, processes and procedures
- Work proactively, and in a constructive and diplomatic manner, with internal and external stakeholders to advance favourable resolutions on transactions, including direct interaction with borrowers
- Communicate effectively with internal and external partners, senior management, regulators and other important stakeholders
- Mentor and develop Special Assets junior staff to advance their skillset and professional effectiveness
- Participate and/or provide leadership for special projects and various priority initiatives
- Recommend changes to improve existing processes, policies, and procedures to achieve greater efficiency, governance and controls
What we’ll need from you:
- Extensive experience in a credit-oriented role, preferably with a large multinational financial services firm
- Solid experience in credit, restructuring, or remedial management with understanding of legal documentation and regulatory frameworks
- Strong credit sense and ability to articulate a view, work across a range of credit products, with experience in early problem recognition and crisis resolution skills
- Effective interpersonal skills, including an ability to be persuasive and build consensus on complex issues
- Highly-experienced credit professional with a deep and relevant restructuring, distressed or comparable expertise
- Demonstrated corporate finance, business strategy and debt structuring skills, with ability to manage complex transactions and conduct negotiations
- Thorough understanding of the risk profile, structure and governing documentation for various credit and market products
- Hands-on experience in stressed and distressed concepts, processes, and associated internal bank accounting (e.g., valuations, cost of credit, etc.)
- History of promoting a strong governance and controls environment
- Senior Credit Officer or Credit Officer approver designation or equivalent credit authority preferred
- Excellent analytical, technical, and problem-solving skills
- Strong communication and stakeholder management abilities
- Proven ability to manage complex, dynamic situations and drive outcomes
- Bachelor’s degree; Master’s/advanced degree(s) and other certifications considered but not required
