The Underwriter is a strategic professional who stays abreast of developments within their area and contributes to directional strategy by applying them to their role and the business. Recognized as a technical authority in their field, they provide commercial insight, develop communication and diplomacy skills, and influence colleagues and external customers through complex deliverables. As a Natural Resources Underwriter in Corporate Developed Markets, the role covers large and complex relationships across the United Kingdom and Western Europe, responsible for underwriting activities in partnership with Banking & International and Risk. The Underwriter will focus on Power, Energy, Chemicals & CET sector clients.

Responsibilities

  • Assist bankers and Underwriters in underwriting requests for credit extensions and the writing of annual reviews, focusing on more complex and higher dollar exposure transactions.
  • Perform detailed financial analysis on companies, including trend and ratio analysis, and interpret financial information.
  • Conduct collateral analysis on accounts receivable, inventory, machinery, equipment and real estate to evaluate collateral performance and repayment capacity.
  • Prepare monthly and/or quarterly reviews of existing borrowers to track compliance with loan covenants.
  • Build a solid understanding of Citibank products and services within Commercial Banking and the broader organization.
  • Coordinate with bankers on customer calls and site visits when appropriate.
  • Perform industry and geographical research and other due diligence as needed.
  • Be familiar with Citibank credit policies, regulatory policies and standards to assist compliance and obtain satisfactory ratings from internal and external auditors.
  • Provide training for less experienced credit officers and other credit center staff in application processing, credit analysis and loan closing roles.
  • Provide backup to the team manager for workflow distribution and monitoring as needed.
  • Recommend process changes to achieve greater efficiency.
  • Appropriately assess risk when business decisions are made, considering compliance, ethics, and transparency in reporting control issues.

Qualifications

  • Extensive relevant work experience in a similar role.
  • Bachelor's degree in finance or accounting (preferred).
  • Prior experience in a financial institution in a loan officer or underwriting role; credit training a plus.
  • Advanced analytical skills, including reading and assessing company financial statements, cash flow, industry and competitive analysis, and projections.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of intermediate accounting theory and its practical application in credit underwriting.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to complete assignments on time.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Problem recognition and resolution skills.
  • Ability to work autonomously and within a team.
  • Proficiency in spreadsheet and word processing applications (Excel and Word preferred), including use of graphs, charts, and Moody’s financial analysis software.

Education

  • Bachelor’s/University degree.
  • Master’s degree preferred.
