Head of Data Engineering

We are seeking a Head of Data Engineering for our client, a Cyber focused startup, on a fully remote basis. This is a great opportunity for someone who has a keen interest in Cyber Security. Alongside a starting salary of between £90k-£110k, they have some excellent benefits including unlimited annual leave and equity in the business. For this role, you MUST be resident and eligible to work in the UK, unsupported by a visa.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and Mentor: Guide and develop the data engineering team, fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement.
- Data Infrastructure Ownership: Take a leadership role in designing, developing, and maintaining the data infrastructure that powers our cybersecurity platform, which identifies vulnerabilities for large enterprises at scale.
- Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with product, front-end, cybersecurity, and operations teams to ensure alignment between data initiatives and business goals, delivering solutions that meet organizational needs.
- Innovation & Problem-Solving: Drive innovation in tackling complex data engineering challenges, constantly improving how we handle, process, and visualize large volumes of data.
- Architect Scalable Solutions: Build and optimize data-driven microservices, ensuring scalability, performance, and reliability at an enterprise level.
Technical Expertise:
- Backend Technologies: FastAPI, Airflow.
- Databases: MySQL, MongoDB.
- Messaging Systems: Kafka, RabbitMQ.
Ideal Candidate Profile:
The ideal candidate will have 8+ years of experience in:
- Leading the design, development, and maintenance of critical data-driven microservices and distributed systems.
- Managing and optimizing both relational and non-relational databases to ensure performance, scalability, and reliability.
- Writing clean, maintainable, and testable code, with extensive knowledge of testing strategies and best practices for large-scale systems.
- Designing complex systems using patterns such as event-sourcing, CQRS, or similar methods to handle high data throughput and ensure scalability.
Bonus Skills:
- Experience working with large datasets and handling ‘big data’ in the context of security analysis.
- Familiarity with platform engineering and an understanding of how data engineering interacts with overall infrastructure.
- Experience working in an Agile environment with a strong focus on DevOps practices.
