Principal Critical Infrastructure Electrical Engineer with experience of Generator installations, large UPS systems, substation design, mission-critical and infrastructure-oriented projects is required by a global consultancy. This role can be based anywhere in the UK and they have multiple roles to fill at all levels.
Electrical services engineers with infrastructure/external works experience beyond standard building services:
- Generator installations, large UPS systems, substation design
- Mission critical and infrastructure-oriented projects
Seniority: Senior engineer level upwards
Security clearance: SC level preferred (increasingly required by clients)
They deliver innovative engineering solutions across aviation, commercial, residential, education, healthcare, transport, defence, and energy sectors - with defence and energy experience considered especially valuable.
Experience required:
- A qualification in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Chartered Engineer status with CIBSE or IET (preferred).
- Strong software proficiency - ETAP, Amtech/ProDesign, Dialux/Relux, NBS, and Microsoft tools.
- Experience designing PV and Battery Energy Storage Systems.
- Understanding of energy-reduction strategies and approaches to decarbonising buildings.
- Experience in design consultancy and/or contractor design environments.
- A proactive approach, strong decision-making ability, and the confidence to lead deliverables within time and cost constraints.
Technical Scope & Project Types:
- Voltage requirements: Comfortable with 11kV schemes (33kV similar)
- DNO standards familiarity and substation design experience expected
Key project areas:
- Large airport expansion projects
- Major railway station developments
- Data center work for global providers
- Defense secure/mission critical projects
- Nuclear power stations (Hinkley Point, SMR projects, fusion development)
Most important candidate quality: Breadth of experience and willingness to learn outside comfort zone. Must actually design systems, not just manage suppliers. Need ownership mentality and self-education drive.
Duties of the role:
- Interpreting and understanding detailed project briefs.
- Designing and specifying electrical systems, including LV & MV power, earthing, PV, BESS, and grid-connected renewable technologies.
- Producing detailed electrical calculations using industry-standard tools such as Trimble ProDesign, ETAP, and PV design software.
- Preparing high-quality technical specifications.
- Working closely with our BIM team to develop coordinated Revit models and drawings.
- Carrying out site surveys, inspections, and monitoring installation works.
- Creating clear and technically robust reports and documentation.
