The role will provide intensive exposure to LV and HV network operations, outage planning, switching activities, fault and emergency response, permit systems, safety rules, field operations, client systems and operational leadership.

The programme is aimed at graduates who are interested in practical power systems, field engineering and live network operations rather than purely design-based engineering.

It combines technical training, field mentoring, supervised switching exposure, competency assessment and operational leadership development.

The longer-term objective is to build a pipeline of capable, safety-led Authorised Persons and future Senior Authorised Persons.

  • Develop a practical understanding of electricity distribution infrastructure, including overhead lines, substations, underground cables, LV networks, HV plant, switchgear, mobile generation and network diagrams.
  • Shadow Authorised Persons and Senior Authorised Persons during switching, isolation planning, outage coordination, fault response and permit-related activities.
  • Build competence in interpreting network diagrams, switching schedules, risk assessments, method statements, permits and operational documentation.
  • Participate in structured site rotations across planning, construction, outage coordination, commissioning, maintenance, fault response and control-room interface activities.
  • Complete all required training, learning logs, supervised activity records, switching evidence and competency assessments in line with the programme structure.
  • Develop the confidence to contribute to toolbox talks, site briefings, operational reviews and safety discussions.
  • Progress, where appropriate, towards LV authorisation, limited HV switching exposure and SAP readiness, subject to formal company and client authorisation processes.
  • Demonstrate safe behaviours, operational discipline, accurate record keeping and strong communication when working with field teams, supervisors, project teams, control functions and clients

Requirements

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Power Engineering or a closely related discipline.
  • Strong interest in operational power systems, electrical networks, field engineering and safety-critical environments.
  • Strong safety-first mindset and willingness to work in live operational environments under supervision.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, follow procedures, ask questions and escalation risks appropriately.
  • Strong attention to detail, particularly when reviewing drawings, switching documents, permits and operational records.
  • Full driving licence, or commitment to obtaining one within an agreed timeframe.
  • Flexibility to travel across operational sites and support planned works, reactive works and emergency response exposure as part of the programme.
  • Progression Outcome

Successful completion of the programme should position the individual for progression into an Authorised Person / Junior SAP pathway or Senior Authorised Person candidate role, subject to formal competency review, authorisation requirements, business need and client approval processes.
