We are seeking an exceptional Commercial Director to lead the commercial function of a major, high value infrastructure project. This role will sit on the project board and is for an individual with a proven track record of managing significant commercial risk, leading high performing teams, and driving profitability across large scale civil engineering programmes.
The successful candidate will bring credibility, presence and the ability to influence at every level, from project teams through to executive stakeholders and clients. This opportunity will suit an established Commercial Director who has operated on major infrastructure, highways, rail, energy, water or other large civil engineering projects where contract values run into the hundreds of millions. This is not a role for someone taking on their first Commercial Director post.
The Role
- Provide strategic leadership across the commercial function, ensuring robust governance, effective risk management and strong commercial performance across the portfolio.
- Lead and develop a large commercial team across multiple projects and regions.
- Set the commercial strategy and ensure alignment with business objectives.
- Manage contractual and commercial risk across major civil engineering programmes.
- Drive profitability, cash performance and commercial best practice.
- Support business growth through client engagement, bidding and strategic opportunities.
- Build strong relationships with clients, partners and key stakeholders.
- Provide leadership and direction to senior commercial managers and project teams.
- Champion high standards of governance, compliance and commercial integrity.
- Contribute to executive decision making as a key member of the leadership team.
About You
We are looking for a respected commercial leader with the experience and gravitas to operate at executive level. You will bring:
- Extensive commercial leadership experience within major civil engineering or infrastructure environments.
- A successful track record managing large, complex projects and frameworks with significant contract values.
- Deep knowledge of NEC and other major forms of contract.
- Strong commercial acumen with a proven ability to improve performance and deliver sustainable growth.
- Experience leading and developing large commercial teams.
- Outstanding stakeholder management and negotiation skills.
- The ability to build trust and credibility with clients, partners and senior leadership teams.
- A collaborative leadership style that promotes accountability, performance and continuous improvement.
- Degree qualified in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management or a related discipline.
- Professional membership with RICS, ICES or equivalent is desirable.
