Direct and supervise the survey crew to make exact measurements and determine site layout to support all disciplines with a quality layout for unit installation. Provide data relevant to the shape, contour, gravitation, location, elevation, or dimension of land or land features on or near the earth's surface for engineering, construction, and other purposes.

Principal Duties & Accountabilities

  • Perform all of the principal duties and accountabilities of craft workers under supervision.
  • Verify the accuracy of survey data including measurements and calculations conducted at survey sites.
  • Calculate heights, depths, relative positions, property lines, and other characteristics of terrain or current installations.
  • Prepare and maintain sketches, maps, reports, and legal descriptions of surveys to describe, certify, and assume liability for work performed.
  • Prepare or supervise the preparation of all data, charts, plots, maps, records, and documents related to surveys.
  • Compute geodetic measurements and interpret survey data to determine positions, shapes, and elevations of geomorphic and topographic features.
  • Determine longitudes and latitudes of important features and boundaries in survey areas using theodolites, transits, levels, and satellite-based global positioning systems (GPS).
  • Record the results of surveys, including the shape, contour, location, elevation, and dimensions of land or land features.
  • Coordinate findings with the work of engineering and architectural personnel, clients, and others concerned with projects.
  • Establish fixed points for use in making maps, using geodetic and engineering instruments.
  • Train Rodman, helpers, and direct their work in activities such as performing surveys or drafting maps.
  • Adjust surveying instruments to maintain their accuracy.
  • Lead and support all safety related processes and programs as requested.
  • Engage with the work team to ensure zero injuries.
  • Watch for hazards and report concerns to supervisor or safety professional, using stop-work authority if necessary.
  • Have an understanding of scheduling, material control, and unit man-hour performance reporting and become familiar with the Field Progress Management System (FPMS).
  • Create and execute a one-week schedule.
  • Set and execute crew goals based on the project unit rates.
  • Review crew’s timecards for correct hours and phase coding.
  • Report all accidents and near misses to supervisor, participate in investigations, and review accident causes with employees.
  • Complete and sign off on daily safety planning, identify safety hazards, and take corrective action to eliminate or mitigate hazards.
  • Assure all crew members understand, participate, and sign all pre-job safety planning tools at shift start and end.
  • Understand and respond appropriately to all safety hazards and warning devices such as backup alarms, smell of smoke, color-coded warning tags, and warning sirens.
  • Understand, support, implement, and follow lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Attend site-specific training and assure compliance.
  • Follow established safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe and clean work environment.
  • Use effective verbal and written communication skills and perform rapid arithmetic with whole numbers and fractions.
  • Listen to other employees and supervisor’s suggestions, complaints, problems, safety concerns, and recommendations; evaluate and implement plans of action.
  • Consult with supervisor and, if needed, HR on any issues.
  • Coordinate and communicate work with other crafts and co-workers, and manage other crafts when requested.
  • Train/teach safety practices, policies, and procedures related to assigned tasks.
  • Perform task planning to safely and efficiently carry out all aspects of assigned work.
  • Plan and communicate with supervisor to assure adequate supply of tools, materials, and equipment.
  • Gain a complete understanding of the scope of work and related parts of the project; develop a thorough understanding of the project plans, specifications, and schedule as they relate to the portion of work assigned.
  • Conduct toolbox meetings and communicate safety concerns, work scope, plans, and schedules to crews.
  • Participate in quantity report collection daily/weekly as needed.
  • Assure employees produce quality work meeting plans, specifications, and industry standards.
  • Read and understand plans and specifications, including one-line diagrams, cable and conduit schedules, ladder diagrams, P&ID’s, and loop diagrams.
  • Visualize two-dimensional drawings in three dimensions.
  • Develop complete understanding of contract plans and specifications; assure crew plans, layouts, diagrams, installs, and/or repairs wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus, and control equipment in accordance with those plans and specifications.
  • Inspect subordinate’s work for compliance with contract plans, specifications, and industry standards; ensure construction procedures are followed during installation; point out deficiencies, explain them, and take corrective action.
  • Observe the functioning of installed equipment or systems to identify hazards and needs for adjustments, relocation, or replacement.
  • Examine/inspect field conditions and identify problems, inaccuracies, and cost-saving measures that may arise; take corrective actions as needed.
  • Ensure construction equipment is correctly operated, maintained, in good working order, and daily equipment inspections are completed for equipment being used.
  • Complete performance reviews of craft workers according to Hourly Performance Assessment Guidelines and ensure subordinates are qualified for their work at their level.
  • Comply with Company Code of Conduct and jobsite policies.
  • Perform all other job-related duties as requested by supervisor.

Requirements

  • At least 4 years of experience working in the construction field with layout or survey responsibilities.
  • Must have working knowledge of using mathematics to solve problems, verify mathematical calculations, gather physical survey data, document technical design details, analyze physical, survey, or geographic data, survey land to measure or determine features, create maps, determine operational criteria or specifications, calibrate scientific or technical equipment, coordinate activities with suppliers, contractors, clients, or other departments or disciplines, direct surveying activities, and calculate geographic positions from survey data.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any or all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

Work Conditions

  • Lift and carry heavy items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Stand, kneel, bend, stoop, move in and around confined and cluttered places, and uneven areas; see and hear naturally or with correction.

  • Requires using hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls according to a set procedure.
  • Requires repetitive movement.
  • Climb and maintain balance on steel framework, stairs, ladders, and scaffolds.
  • Work up to a 10-12 hour shift doing hard physical labor in varying temperature extremes and other outside conditions.

Work Environment

  • Typical construction site environment.
  • Requires working in very hot (above 90°F) or very cold (below 32°F) temperatures and exposure to inclement weather such as dust, wind, snow, rain, etc.
  • Requires working in extremely bright or inadequate lighting conditions.
