Do you want to make a real difference to people facing homelessness? Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council is looking for a Housing Needs Administrator to join our Housing Options service. This is a vital frontline role supporting residents who may be experiencing housing difficulty and requiring clear, compassionate and efficient assistance. You will provide high-quality administrative and technical support to the Housing Needs Team, helping ensure a responsive, accurate and customer‑centred service. You'll be the first point of contact for many customers, dealing with enquiries by telephone, email and in person, while also supporting key housing processes and maintaining accurate records. The role involves working with sensitive personal information, supporting locally agreed schemes, and liaising with internal teams and partner agencies to help resolve housing‑related issues.
Key Responsibilities
- Providing professional, customer‑focused administrative support to the Housing Options service.
- Responding to enquiries from residents in a responsive, accurate and compassionate manner.
- Maintaining and updating customer records across IT and case management systems.
- Supporting officers and managers with complaints, member enquiries and partnership working.
- Liaising with colleagues, temporary accommodation providers and other services to resolve issues.
- Responsibility for maintaining financial records and conducting finance administrative tasks.
- Ensuring compliance with data protection, equality and housing legislation at all times.
Qualifications and Skills
It is essential the postholder has a good general standard of education, including GCSE Math and English (or equivalent), strong IT skills, including confidence using Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook. Experience in a customer‑facing role with excellent written and verbal communication skills is required, as is the ability to work to deadlines and use initiative to solve problems. An understanding of equality, diversity and data protection principles is necessary. Experience within housing, local government or a similar public service environment would be an advantage but is not essential. The role is hybrid with the expectation of attending the office at least twice a week. The ability to converse at ease with members of the public and provide advice in accurate spoken English is essential.
