Overview

A fire engineer uses science and engineering principles to protect people and property from the devastating effects of fires. Fire engineers design fire safety measures, conduct fire risk assessments, and ensure the structural integrity of buildings. A fire engineer also coordinates fire safety standards and regulations to minimise fire-related risk.

The role involves regular site inspections, analysis and evaluation of fire control methods, and the development of emergency plans. Fire engineers use their knowledge of fire dynamics and human behaviours to ensure the safety of everyone occupying a building.

Key Duties

  3. Identifying possible fire-related risks and reducing or eliminating them.
  4. Making designs, calculations, sketches, and/or diagrams to help prevent fire or fire spread (‘fire strategy’).
  5. Incorporating fire safety procedures into designs – such as sprinkler systems, smoke control systems, fire alarms, Fire Service facilities, and emergency escape routes and exits, to minimise the risk of injury and loss of life in the event of a fire, taking into account both the structural integrity of the building and human behaviour.
  6. Making recommendations for the materials used in the construction or refurbishment of a building and for existing buildings.
  7. Keeping up to date with regulations and legislation.
  8. Visiting project/construction sites to conduct site inspections and advise on the installation or implementation of the designs.
  9. Providing advice that feeds into decisions on safe building occupancy levels, fire evacuation plans, and so on.
  10. Providing a variety of fire consultancy services to our varied client base.
  11. Liaising with local authorities, architects, and building control professionals as and when required.

Minimum Requirements

  3. At least 5 years’ experience in a similar position producing fire strategy reports and fire consultancy services for both residential and commercial buildings.
  4. Good understanding of ADB, BS9999, BS9991, and other current guidance and legislation.

Other Responsibilities

  1. Keep abreast of current legislation, relevant national and international standards and guidelines, and technical developments within the field.
  2. Respond to requests for client work and proposals.

  7. Contribute to a rolling forecast to provide visibility of future workload.

  9. Deliver against key personal and business KPIs.
  10. Support junior members of staff in the delivery of consultancy services.
  11. Support the team and other departments to achieve company goals.
  12. Ensure full implementation and use of the competency framework.
  13. Support as required in the definition of the current and future market, market drivers, and service offerings of the business.
  14. Market the relevant services of the company to existing and new clients.
