My client, who is a rail engineering contractor, is currently looking to recruit an experienced LV Electrical Design Engineer to support the delivery of rail infrastructure projects across stations and trackside environments. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, development, and coordination of low voltage electrical systems, ensuring compliance with rail industry standards, client requirements, and project specifications. This role requires demonstrable experience in station electrical systems and trackside infrastructure, with the ability to produce high-quality design deliverables using Bentley MicroStation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver LV electrical designs for rail infrastructure projects from concept through to detailed design.
  • Design station electrical systems including:
    • Internal and external lighting
    • Emergency lighting
    • Small power systems
    • Distribution systems
    • Cable containment and routing
  • Design and coordinate trackside electrical infrastructure including:
    • Location cases
    • REBs and equipment rooms
    • Power supplies
    • Lineside electrical equipment
    • Cable routes and associated infrastructure
  • Produce design drawings, calculations, specifications, reports and supporting documentation.
  • Undertake lighting calculations and assessments in accordance with relevant rail and industry standards.
  • Interface with multidisciplinary teams including signalling, telecoms, civils, M&E and systems engineering disciplines.
  • Support design reviews, technical assurance processes and client engagement activities.
  • Ensure designs comply with Network Rail standards, railway group standards, BS7671 and relevant industry regulations.
  • Provide technical support throughout project delivery and commissioning phases.

Essential Requirements

Experience

  • Proven experience as an Electrical Design Engineer within the rail industry.
  • Strong background in LV electrical design for railway stations and trackside infrastructure.
  • Demonstrable experience designing station lighting systems and associated electrical infrastructure.
  • Experience producing designs in accordance with Network Rail standards and rail industry requirements.
  • Experience coordinating electrical designs within multidisciplinary rail projects.
  • Ability to undertake cable sizing, load assessments, fault level studies and protection coordination activities.

Technical Skills

  • Proficient in Bentley MicroStation for the production of rail design drawings.
  • Strong understanding of LV power distribution systems, station lighting and emergency lighting, earthing and bonding, cable containment systems, electrical calculations and design substantiation.
  • Working knowledge of BS7671 (IET Wiring Regulations).
  • Competent in the preparation of technical reports, specifications and design documentation.

Qualifications

  • Degree or HND/HNC in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Membership of a relevant professional institution (IET or equivalent) desirable.
  • Working towards or holding Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng) status is advantageous.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience in CISS and rail communications systems design.
  • Experience with telecoms and station communications infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of station systems integration and multidisciplinary coordination.
  • Experience working on Network Rail, London Underground, TfL or major rail infrastructure projects.
  • Familiarity with GRIP, PACE or equivalent rail project delivery frameworks.
