Design the machines that put cutting‑edge defence systems through their paces. Verso is partnering with a highly respected UK defence contractor that designs and builds bespoke robotic test platforms for defence agencies across Western Europe. Order books are strong, the work is genuinely one‑of‑a‑kind, and they're entering a real growth phase – which is why they're looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer or Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to help drive the design and development of their platforms.

This is a hands‑on design role with real ownership. You’ll work on bespoke projects from concept to completion:

  • scoping requirements with clients,
  • designing the mechanical systems in SolidWorks,
  • supporting the build, assembly, and testing through to on‑site commissioning.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Designing mechanical systems and components in SolidWorks, applying GD&T for precision
  • Producing engineering and assembly drawings, plus instruction documentation for delivered systems
  • Working with clients to translate bespoke requirements into buildable designs
  • Helping maintain project plans and keeping delivery on track
  • Working alongside software engineers and workshop technicians to integrate software with your hardware and keep builds true to your drawings
  • Supporting commissioning at customer sites (occasional international travel)

What we’re looking for:

  • Solid mechanical design experience, ideally with exposure to robotics or motion/actuation systems, or Scientific Instrumentation
  • Strong SolidWorks experience (preferred)
  • Confident, practical hands‑on engineering ability – comfortable with hand tools and complex assembly
  • Good communicator who enjoys collaborating and sharing knowledge with production staff
  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar is preferred, but strong relevant experience counts for just as much

Nice to have:

  • Knowledge of electrical, pneumatic or hydraulic systems
  • Additive manufacturing experience
  • An understanding of software and electronics integration for complex motion systems.

On offer: GBP40k - GBP55k DOE, overtime, on‑site canteen, free parking and a relaxed, casual‑dress working environment – Monday to Friday at their Buckingham HQ.

Important: You’ll need the right to work in the UK and be eligible for security clearance to work on defence contracts.
