Business Unit Description: The goal of CIBC’s Capital Markets business is to be the premier client-focused wholesale bank based in Canada. To deliver on this, the Capital Markets arm of CIBC provides a wide range of credit, capital markets, investment banking, and research products and services to government, institutional, corporate and retail clients in Canada and in key markets around the world.
Job Purpose: The Global Rates & GMF Group offers fixed income securities, interest rate derivatives, collateral financing and securitization products to CIBC’s top-tier clients. This group is composed of 7 line of businesses including Bond Trading, Interest Rate Derivatives, Interest Rate Options, Capital Market Positioning, Global Collateral Financing, Money Market and Securitization. As a member of this group, the trader will provide liquidity in fixed income products to our wide array of customers, manage the risk inherent to market making of these securities and support the distribution efforts of the division.
Key Accountabilities:
- Responsible to make markets to CIBC customers in Canadian and US$ fixed income securities during European trading hours.
- Manage risk in a portfolio of securities used for the purpose of market making.
- Operate within risk limits assigned while achieving profitability targets.
- Work closely with sales to deliver liquidity in Government and SSA securities.
- Partner with fellow traders on the desk to manage risk and offer hedges for financial solutions.
- Participate in client facing activities to promote the capabilities and services of the bank.
- Support the sales efforts of the International distribution group as well as occasionally supporting the trading team in North America.
CROSS-FUNCTIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
- Regularly partners with sales and marketers to develop products, client solutions and strategies.
- Interacts on a regular basis with internal Risk and Advisory staff to ensure that proposed transactions comply with internal risk policies and industry regulations.
- Collaborates with traders and originators in the execution of transactions.
- Refer, where appropriate, opportunities to the firm.
Compliance Requirements/Responsibilities:
- Work effectively within CIBC's corporate governance practices and policies (e.g. Risk Management, Finance, Human Resources, Legal and Compliance) to ensure all potential risks are appropriately addressed and that CIBC legal/reputation issues and shareholder objectives are covered, and to promote the firm’s vision, mission and values.
- Ensure adherence to all regulatory and legal standards appropriate to the business.
- As an employee of CIBC, the incumbent must comply with all applicable CIBC and Line of Business policies, standards, guidelines and controls.
Knowledge And Skills:
- Degree educated (preferably MBA or equivalent), with a minimum of 5-10 years’ experience within the industry.
- Comprehensive knowledge of financial markets, in particular Fixed Income and Interest Rates.
- Knowledge of various legal and regulatory requirements within the financial services industry.
- Strong understanding of how to read financial statements.
- Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills in order to develop, manage and leverage relationships with clients, internal and/or external business partners.
- Significant presentation/interactive skills sufficient to clearly articulate complex conceptual information/ideas on issues involving extensive interpretation and opinion.
- Proven ability to develop viable product ideas and to lead product development process from idea generation through to closing.
- Strong project management skills.
- Highly developed communication skills, both oral and written, sufficient to convey complex factual and conceptual information on issues requiring detailed explanation and interpretation.
- Demonstrated commitment to client satisfaction.
- High level leadership, management and motivational skills.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Open concept trading floor environment with exposure to noise and distractions.
- Often required to work earlier than standard business hours, aligned with stock market hours of operation.
- Required to make frequent decisions in a fast paced work environment.
