The Opportunity
Churchillfield Recruitment is proud to partner with a boutique, high-quality Main Contractor based in the heart of Brighton. Due to a strong pipeline of local projects, they are looking for an ambitious Assistant Quantity Surveyor to join their close-knit team. This is a unique opportunity to step away from the "cog-in-a-machine" environment of a Tier 1 firm. Working for a smaller contractor means you won't just be stuck behind a spreadsheet; you will be involved in every stage of the project lifecycle, from initial tender to final account, working directly alongside the Commercial Director.
The Role
You will support the commercial delivery of various local schemes, including bespoke residential builds, commercial refurbishments, and structural extensions. This role is designed for someone who wants to take ownership of their work and fast-track their journey to becoming a fully autonomous Quantity Surveyor.
Key Responsibilities
- Procurement: Assisting with subcontractor enquiries, analyzing quotes, and issuing orders.
- Valuations: Supporting monthly subcontractor and client valuations and processing payment notices.
- Cost Control: Monitoring site progress and assisting in the preparation of monthly CVRs (Cost Value Reconciliations).
- Variations: Identifying and pricing changes on-site to ensure project profitability.
- Tendering: Assisting the estimating team with "take-offs" and document preparation for new bids.
- Site Presence: Conducting regular site visits across Brighton and the surrounding Sussex area to verify work-in-progress.
Requirements
- Experience: 1-3 years of experience as an Assistant or Trainee QS within a Main Contracting or Sub-Contracting environment.
- Education: Degree or HNC in Quantity Surveying or Construction Management (Current students nearing completion will be considered).
- Technical Skills: Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel and the ability to read technical drawings accurately.
- Soft Skills: High level of organization, a "can-do" attitude, and the confidence to negotiate with subcontractors.
- Location: Must be based within a commutable distance of Brighton (BN1/BN2/BN3) and hold a full UK Driving Licence.
What's on Offer
- Salary: £35,000 - £45,000 (Negotiable based on experience).
- Benefits: Car allowance or mileage, pension scheme, and performance-related bonus.
- Progression: A clear, documented path to becoming a Project QS within 12-24 months.
- Culture: A relaxed yet professional office environment where your achievements are visible and rewarded.
