The Bishop of Newcastle wishes to appoint a half-time priest to be Vicar of Cullercoats St George. Cullercoats is a popular residential area between the towns of North Shields and Whitley Bay. St George’s church building dominates the coastal skyline and is a key landmark along with Tynemouth Priory and the Whitley Bay Lighthouse. There is a mixed population of very settled residents alongside increasing numbers moving to the coast because of the setting, good transport links to the city centre and the good standard of living it offers. There is also a seasonal element of visitors to the beaches and coastal attractions in the summer. St George’s building is hugely impressive and the worship is shaped by the space. Music is a particular strength with great opportunities for outreach.

We are seeking a half-time stipendiary male priest:

  • Who has a burning desire to serve the Lord Jesus and his people and a strong belief in the power of prayer;
  • Who is nurtured in the catholic faith, able to support the aims of The Society and who will maintain our tradition and high standard of inspiring sacramental worship;
  • Who is an approachable, sociable, friendly pastor with a sense of humour;
  • Who is able to develop ways of bringing in new members into the congregation and to develop links with young people and families in the area;
  • Who is able to generate and take forward ideas collaboratively, especially in working with local tourist initiatives, local schools and the wider Deanery.
