Job Summary
The post holder will be an exceptional organist and versatile choral trainer who will support the work of the music department at Liverpool Cathedral.
As an organist, they will play for most statutory services and be a champion of the Cathedral’s magnificent Willis organ which celebrates its centenary in 2026.
As a choral trainer, they will support the Director of Music and wider team in the training, accompanying, and conducting of the cathedral’s choirs and ensembles, and engage actively with the cathedral’s expansive Schools Singing Programme.
- Key tasks and responsibilities
- As Organist
- To be principal accompanist to the Cathedral Choir across the routine of sung services.
- To ensure personal musical preparation and practice, and the learning of new repertoire.
- To give recitals in the Cathedral each year.
- To be principal accompanist to the Schools Singing Programme.
- To mentor the Organ Scholar, tutoring them and developing their skills and expertise.
- To be a duty organist for non-statutory services (for which extra fees are normally payable).
- To go on a playing rota during holiday periods (for which extra fees are normally payable).
- To engage in other organ playing demands commensurate with the role.
- As Choral Trainer
- To assist in rehearsing and conducting of the Cathedral Choir as required.
- To lead regular rehearsals of the Choral Students (former choristers).
- To play a lead role with a Cathedral Voluntary Choir which would sing at services as required.
- To work with the cathedral ensembles in other ways commensurate with the role.
- Administrative duties
- To work with the Director of music on a variety of musical and logistical projects.
- To work collaboratively with colleagues within the music department and wider cathedral, including the Canon Precentor, Operations Manager, and the appointed Organ Builder/Tuner.
- To be responsible for arranging the maintenance and tuning of the cathedral organs.
- To organise the cathedral’s annual organ recital series.
- Act as a champion for the cathedral organs both within the cathedral and externally.
- To carry out other administrative tasks commensurate with the role.
- Safeguarding
To work with colleagues (including the Safeguarding Team) to ensure the highest standards of safeguarding are maintained.
