Director of Music
St. Michael’s Church, Camden Town
Salary: £8,000 - £10,000 per annum dependant on experience, with additional fees for agreed special services.
Music is at the heart of worship at St. Michael’s, and we are looking for an accomplished organist and encouraging choral director to lead and develop our musical life.
Our small, friendly and committed amateur choir sings to a high standard. Many members have collegiate choral experience, are confident sight-readers and enjoy a diverse repertoire from plainchant and early Baroque music to works by contemporary composers.
The regular commitment is on Sunday mornings, with a choir rehearsal at 9.30 am followed by the sung Solemn Mass at 10.30 am. There is no regular Evensong, although the Director of Music will also lead the music and the choir for a small number of additional services around Christmas, Easter and other important occasions.
We are looking for someone who:
- is an accomplished organist, with playing at ARCO, or equivalent, standard;
- is a confident, supportive and engaging choral director who can inspire skilled amateur singers and maintain high musical standards;
- has a strong understanding of Anglican liturgy, the church year and the Anglo-Catholic tradition;
- has a broad knowledge of sacred choral and organ repertoire, including plainchant;
- will value our musical tradition while bringing imagination, fresh ideas and a thoughtful approach to developing the choir;
- is organised, reliable and able to communicate and plan effectively; and
- shares St. Michael’s commitment to inclusion, worship and service to the wider community.
The Director of Music will work closely with the interim Parish Priest and will have real opportunity to shape the repertoire and future direction of music at St Michael’s.
Following consideration of applications, shortlisted candidates will be invited to St. Michael’s on one Sunday to rehearse and direct the choir and play for a Sunday Solemn Mass and attend an interview. An honorarium and reasonable travel expenses will be provided.
