The Diocese of Southwark is committed to the highest standards of safeguarding, particularly for children and adults in our parishes who may be at risk of abuse or neglect. This is an excellent opportunity to join a dedicated safeguarding team, who implement national and local safeguarding policies and procedures, and through case work and delivery of training, ensure that they are implemented throughout the Diocese.
We aim to be proactive in ensuring parishes and worshipping communities are aware of their safeguarding responsibilities and to provide appropriate guidance, support and information to keep them abreast of policy and practice developments. This role will act as the contact point for those in the Church and community to provide information and advice, including liaising with statutory agencies, and to support them in their safeguarding responsibilities.
You will advise senior clergy in following appropriate procedures and ensure the development of good safeguarding practice in the Diocese through advice, information and training. The role includes taking the lead and coordinating the Safeguarding Case Management Groups of Diocesan and parish staff when an allegation of abuse is made against a church officer with appropriate liaison with statutory agencies, ensuring appropriate support is provided for alleged victims and their families, and alleged perpetrators and their families, throughout an investigation and thereafter.
You will support the delivery of an annual safeguarding training programme for people in different roles in the Diocese, and assist in evaluating, reviewing and monitoring the training programme with relevant staff. You will also be part of the cover for the out of hours mobile phone for urgent safeguarding concerns.
Ideally you will have experience of:
- Child and/or adult protection work as a senior practitioner and/or manager
- Current legislation relating to safeguarding children and vulnerable adults
- Risk assessment and management of those who have offended against children or adults, and who may pose a risk to children or vulnerable adults
- The structure and operation of statutory and voluntary organisations in safeguarding
- Statutory multi-agency working such as MASH, MAPPA, MARAC and PREVENT
- Trauma informed practice when working with victims or survivors of abuse, including adults with mental health issues.
