This senior role is central to the profitability and strategic growth of the Commercial Insurance Division's Property portfolio in the UKI. The purpose is to steward the portfolio's performance, bearing a shared responsibility for its overall underwriting profit. This entails a blend of risk selection, disciplined portfolio management, and the cultivation of strategic underwriting strategies. The role is accountable for achieving premium, loss ratio, and expense targets by actively shaping the book's composition and ensuring underwriting discipline. A key aspect of the role is to serve as a technical referral point and to champion Chubb's underwriting disciplines in Commercial Insurance.
Key Responsibilities
- Strategic Underwriting and Portfolio Stewardship
- Oversee the CI (MM, LMM exc DCI) property business portfolio, including IPs.
- Develop, implement, and communicate underwriting strategies to the CI property and package teams.
- Use portfolio insights and trend analysis to influence and refine underwriting strategies.
- Monitor actual performance against plan, manage pricing decisions, and provide input into planning and budgeting.
- Ensure disciplined risk selection and portfolio management to achieve premium, loss ratio, and expense targets.
- Serve as a technical referral point for complex risks and underwriting queries.
- Trading Partner and Market Engagement
- Build and maintain relationships with key brokers and large clients.
- Negotiate terms and represent Chubb's interests in the market.
- Act as a Client Executive for a select portfolio of strategic clients, ensuring the highest level of service and reinforcing Chubb's commitment to partnership.
- Regional Portfolio Governance & Pipeline Management
- Manage authority delegation within CI, either directly if authorised or in coordination with the Head of CI.
- Liaise between Head of Property UKI, COG, and UKI Management for all CI property matters.
- Maintain open communication with internal stakeholders (e.g., claims, loss control, actuarial) to ensure a unified strategy on key accounts.
- Act as a referral point for other regions on risks with exposures in your geographic or technical area of expertise, promoting knowledge sharing and consistent risk assessment.
- Market Engagement and Travel
- Travel regularly to each of the region's Chubb offices to align on strategy, share best practices, and provide support to local teams.
- Undertake regular travel to meet with key brokers and clients as required to build relationships, negotiate terms, and ensure a strong physical presence in all UKI regions.
- Financial Performance and Operational Accountability
- Monitor and report on portfolio performance, including analysis of loss ratios, trends, and aggregate exposures.
- Drive strategic underwriting decisions to achieve target returns and portfolio profitability.
- Provide input into planning and budgeting processes.
- Uphold the highest standards of the company's risk culture, ensuring full compliance with all internal guidelines, regulatory requirements, and fairness and transparency principles within MAD.
- Client Service and Leadership
- Champion an inclusive and high-performing team culture by mentoring, training, and developing less experienced underwriters.
- Share knowledge on underwriting philosophy and portfolio management.
- Ensure open and effective communication with the CI team on all relevant property and package matters.
Qualifications
- In depth, proven experience in commercial Property underwriting, with significant exposure to large accounts or complex risks and a demonstrable track record of portfolio profitability.
- ACII qualification required.
- Expert-level technical underwriting ability, including manuscripting policies, structuring complex deals, and utilising advanced pricing techniques.
- Demonstrable experience in active portfolio management, including analysis of loss ratios, trends, and aggregate exposures.
- Proven history of building and maintaining profitable relationships with key brokers and large clients, with senior-level negotiation skills.
- Exceptional analytical, negotiation, and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly to both internal and external stakeholders.
- Strategic, results-oriented mindset with the ability to thrive in a collaborative, team-based culture.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, with strong Excel skills for portfolio analysis and modelling.
