Chronos Energy are looking to recruit a Head of Engineering for their client, a market leading developer of Heat Network/District Heating schemes. This is a highly technical role and requires a thorough understanding of district heating and cooling schemes, alongside an excellent level of knowledge in associated regulations for such schemes and funding mechanisms to support them.
The role includes managing a team of development engineers supporting the business development of new connections to existing schemes, integration of new technologies to improve scheme performance, and providing the technical input into the development of new schemes. Understanding from basic levels of information at concept stage of what the important technical deliverables are and planning and leading technical workstreams. To achieve the business demands will involve managing simultaneous workstreams using internal and external technical resources to achieve a high quality technical output.
Managing and leading a team of engineers to ensure agreed budgets and deadlines are achieved, whilst ensuring internal and external communications are maintained.
- Managing and assessing the feasibility (technical and commercial) of new connections to our district heating networks or stand-alone new district heating schemes.
- Manage the team outputs to identify and document technical risks, report, and mitigate/manage across mechanical/electrical systems.
- Provide good quality analysis, both technically and commercially, of new connections to our existing district energy networks and stand-alone new district energy schemes, including input into the decarbonisation strategy of existing assets.
- Provide accurate energy analysis of potential district energy systems; assessing peak, annual consumptions and profiles of energy demands of buildings and supply from central plant including impact on CO2 emissions and influence on planning requirements around this.
- Liaising with our Asset Intelligence and Operational teams, integrating operational data into the analysis of new business.
- Managing and providing outputs sizing and specifying heating and cooling generation plant.
- Liaising with our Detailed Design and Project Delivery teams to integrate our on-site experience around project delivery into new projects.
- Techno-economic model development and overall oversight of team output.
- Working with our Operational, Business Development, Commercial and Financial teams to develop whole lifecycle techno-economic models to optimise both the commercial and low carbon energy solutions for our clients.
- Communicating these solutions to internal and external customers.
- Managing the scoping of external subcontractors technical deliverables & managing delivery of subcontractors in line with quality expectations and expected outcomes.
- Leading, mentoring and development of line reports & technically developing the business through knowledge sharing.
- The personnel and resource management of the team, from recruitment and inductions through to development plans and appraisals.
- Ensure team operate to Project document control & management in line with the company Quality Management System.
- Ensure you and your team operate within and adhere to the company policies and procedures.
- Maintain regular reporting of workload and activity within the team and through line management to ensure efficient use of resources and timely completion of agreed work scopes.
- Temporarily stand in for Technical Director on absences when requested.

Technical Skills/Experience Required:
- MEng or equivalent qualification or experience
- Chartered Engineer Status or developing towards this in near future
- Experience of solution development of low carbon energy systems in the built environment.
- Experience in either concept design, feasibility study development, energy and sustainability work, energy efficiency projects and/or energy systems modelling.
- Experience of presenting at exec level.
- Strong analytical skills and interest in problem solving, both technically and commercially.
- Excellent planning capability and experience of managing priorities and deliverables.
- Knowledge of M&E building services design, in relation to district energy systems central plant, buried network and within residential blocks.
- A working knowledge of relevant CIBSE Guides, British Standards, BSRIA and other industry authority publications.
- Knowledge of SAP/SBEM, BREEAM assessments and energy strategies.
- Experience and or knowledge of government funding mechanisms supporting the industry.
- Good knowledge of Excel and specifically working with energy models and commercial feasibility models.
- Knowledge and experience of low carbon energy technologies and their integration into district energy networks.
- Experience of carbon reduction planning requirements in the built environment would be advantageous.
- Knowledge of developing Capex, Opex and Repex costings as well as energy and carbon pricing.
- Experience of managing, leading and developing a team.
