Christchurch School is a co‑ed Episcopal boarding and day school serving grades 9–12. Founded in 1921, it is located on a 125‑acre waterfront campus on the Rappahannock River in eastern Virginia’s tidewater region. Position Overview

Full‑time Humanities Teacher for the 2026‑2027 school year. The role will focus on a comprehensive writing program through a progressive pedagogical lens that uses literature to strengthen writing and rhetoric. Ideal candidates will be collaborative, interested in curriculum development, and embrace a student‑centered approach to teaching and the boarding school model.

Responsibilities

  • Implement a progressive writing curriculum that integrates literature.
  • Collaborate on curriculum design and pedagogy.
  • Lead an advisory group of 7‑10 students.
  • Participate in a duty team one evening per week and 5‑6 weekends per year.
  • Engage in two seasons of co‑curricular activities (athletics, stage, fitness).
  • Support the school's mission and inclusive environment.

Qualifications

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree in English or a related field, or have significant experience teaching English, writing, or rhetoric at the high school level.
  • Be passionate about education as a profession and excited to learn or hone the craft of teaching.
  • Be realistic and enthusiastic about teaching in a boarding school and instructing college‑bound high school students with a wide range of academic backgrounds.
  • Be a U.S. citizen or existing Green Card holder.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two to four years of teaching experience, preferably in a boarding or independent school.
  • An advanced degree in English, a related field, or education.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Ability to work with a team of teachers and students outside of the classroom on multi‑day field experiences.
  • Ability to be mobile around campus and buildings.
  • Ability to work at a desk and computer screen for extended periods.
  • Ability to drive students in a school vehicle.
  • Some travel required (mainly for athletic competitions).
