Christ Church Spitalfields is a growing church community in East London. Together we seek to Follow Jesus, Build Life Together, and Renew East London. Our marketing and communications exist for one purpose: to invite people to join in with what God is doing in this part of the city.
About the role
We are looking for a creative, organised communicator to lead how Christ Church Spitalfields tells its story. You will run our social media, keep the website current, send the weekly newsletter, and design printed and digital materials. You will also lead campaigns for the key moments in our church life, such as Alpha, Easter and Christmas.
You will work closely with our staff team and ministry leads to plan campaigns, understand who we are trying to reach, create designs and publish content. This is a hands-on role with room to grow into building and leading a strong volunteer creative team.
Terms & Conditions
- Hours: Part-time, 3 days per week (0.6 FTE, 24 hours), including Tuesdays and Sundays
- Annual Leave: 33 days pro rata, including statutory bank holidays
- Permanent Contract with a 3 month probationary period
A part of Sunday will form some of your 24 working hours, not an addition to them. Tuesday will be required as a full day, when we have team meetings. The other working days are flexible by agreement with your line manager.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Marketing Strategy and Campaigns
Your main focus is designing and delivering campaigns for the key moments in church life (Alpha, Easter, Christmas and others), alongside our regular weekly communications. This includes:
- Working with ministry leads to plan and deliver campaigns for major events
- Developing a communications strategy across all ministries, with a clear sense of who each one is trying to reach
- Overseeing the design of assets for print and digital use, including sermon series branding
- Owning the church brand and making sure it is used consistently across all communications and signage in the building
- Reporting simply on what is working (reach, sign-ups, attendance) so we can learn from each campaign
Social media
- You will build an engaging, active presence on Instagram and other social media channels that reflects real church life. This includes:
- Planning, creating and scheduling content for each channel
- Working with ministry leads to gather stories and content
- Resharing stories posted by church members and visitors
- Responding to comments and answering simple questions by direct message, passing pastoral enquiries to the right member of staff
- Engaging with partner churches, local organisations and wider Church news
Website and newsletter
- Keeping the website accurate and up to date, including events, service times and sermon series
- Writing, designing and sending the weekly newsletter, and managing the mailing list in line with data protection law
Photography, video and volunteers
- Recruiting, training and leading a volunteer team for photography and videography
- Overseeing short video content for social media and campaigns
- Making sure photo and filming consent is gathered and recorded, especially where children or vulnerable adults are involved
General
- Following the Christ Church Spitalfields safeguarding and data protection policies
- Representing and championing the church's creative projects
- Being a role model in our creative team, showing what it means to follow Jesus both on and off duty
Who we are looking for
- An active Christian faith and a heart for the mission of Christ Church Spitalfields: to Follow Jesus, Build Life Together, and Renew East London
- Experience in marketing, communications or graphic design, with a portfolio to show for it
- Confidence running social media accounts for an organisation
- An excellent communicator who works well with others
- Strong organisational and project management skills, and the ability to prioritise competing demands
- Creativity and fresh ideas
- Reliable, responsible and flexible
- Experience in a church or charity setting
- Video production and editing skills
- Experience with website content management and email marketing tools
- An eye for design across graphics, video and physical spaces
- A desire to grow in leadership
- Experience using Canva, Adobe, Mailchimp, ChurchSuite, and Squarespace
Safeguarding
Christ Church Spitalfields is committed to safeguarding children and vulnerable adults. You will need to share that commitment and understand the policies, legislation and guidance that apply. This role handles images of children, public messages and personal data, so safeguarding is part of everyday practice, not a
policy on a shelf.
Training and development
We invest in the growth of every member of staff. Alongside on-the-job learning, you
will receive role-specific training, including Health and Safety and Safeguarding at
induction, and opportunities for further professional development.
Any offer is subject to satisfactory pre-employment checks:
- Two references: one professional and one personal (we will not contact referees without your permission)
- Right to Work in the UK check
- [DBS check at the appropriate level, if required]
Occupational requirement
This role carries an Occupational Requirement to be a Christian, as permitted under
Schedule 9, Part 1 of the Equality Act 2010. The postholder will speak publicly for
the church, articulate its faith in everything they create, and model Christian
discipleship within the staff team.
