Job Summary
Manage purchasing operations to support vessel needs by sourcing, negotiating, and procuring stores, spares, and provisions while ensuring compliance, cost-efficiency, and continuous improvement.
Responsibilities
- Manage purchasing activities to procure stores, spares, provisions, and project-specific items that comply with specifications and company procedures.
- Oversee the Purchasing Section to ensure efficient operations aligned with company goals.
- Source, negotiate, and secure the best prices and quality for stores and spares for the company’s fleet of vessels.
- Review, draft, and implement purchasing procedures that incorporate energy, health, safety, and environmental standards.
- Communicate the company’s commitment to green purchasing to vendors and suppliers.
- Assess, evaluate, and monitor supplier performance to maintain quality and reliability.
- Approve and award contracts for suppliers of stores, charts, publications, lubricants, paints, gases, and chemicals.
- Set and monitor departmental objectives and KPIs to drive continuous improvement.
- Ensure personnel and contractors involved in purchasing tasks are competent through appropriate education, training, or experience, maintaining all related records.
- Lead cost-saving initiatives within the department without compromising quality, promoting cost-conscious practices among staff.
- Review and recommend improvements to purchasing practices to enhance performance.
- Prepare and manage the purchasing budget to maintain expenses within approved limits.
- Facilitate inter-department communication to maximize organizational value.
- Monitor receipt of purchase orders on board vessels to ensure timely delivery.
- Continuously source suppliers, prices, delivery times, and negotiate terms to optimize procurement outcomes.
- Stay updated on market trends, products, and pricing to inform purchasing decisions.
- Conduct annual audits and evaluations of vendors and suppliers according to schedule.
- Provide backup support during staff absences to maintain uninterrupted department and vessel operations.
CANDIDATE PROFILE / REQUIRED COMPETENCY
- Minimum experience of 5 years in a similar industry.
- Commendable track record in leadership and team spirit.
- Exposure to various vendors and contractors likely to be used by the company on a worldwide basis.
EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS / ACCREDITATIONS
- A diploma/degree in purchasing and logistics management.
- Membership in national association of purchasing management.
