This is a senior individual contributor role at the technical heart of Chip's AI chapter. You will be a key technical contributor to our agentic AI systems, working closely with the Head of AI and the wider engineering team to design, build and scale the infrastructure that powers our customer‑facing AI products.
What you can expect to be doing:
- Architecture & Technical Design
- Work closely with the Head of AI to contribute to and implement the technical architecture of Chip's multi‑agent AI systems — from orchestration layer to inter‑agent communication and context persistence.
- Design bespoke frameworks and tooling where off‑the‑shelf solutions fall short.
- Author and maintain architectural decision records (ADRs) and engineering standards for the AI chapter.
- Evaluate emerging techniques and approaches, adapting from research into production‑ready implementations.
- Delivery & Implementation
- Lead the hands‑on implementation of AI systems alongside the team, maintaining deep technical involvement.
- Build production‑grade systems: observable, reliable, and cost‑efficient at scale across Chip's 400k+ user base.
- Define and implement testing and evaluation strategies for agentic systems — models‑as‑judge, synthetic data, human‑in‑the‑loop processes and runtime safety / quality controls.
- Identify and implement “flywheels” and processes that drive quality and performance through continuous iterative improvements.
- Own the integration of AI systems with Chip's existing infrastructure, including async patterns and SDK design.
- Technical Leadership
- Set the technical bar for AI engineering at Chip — reviewing work, raising standards, and mentoring engineers.
- Work closely with the Head of AI on technical strategy and architectural direction.
- Partner with the AI Product Manager and wider engineering teams on technically complex initiatives.
- Contribute to Chip's company‑wide AI engineering standards and governance.
What we’re looking for:
- Deep hands‑on experience designing and building multi‑agent AI systems in production — not just configuring existing frameworks.
- Proven ability to take AI systems from concept through to production with long‑term ownership.
- Track record of solving hard technical problems: large context windows, hallucination mitigation, novel orchestration patterns.
- Experience building customer‑facing AI systems in regulated, high‑trust, or high‑risk domains is a strong plus.
- Experience building AI systems on AWS is strongly preferred, particularly using services such as Bedrock, SageMaker, ECS, and EventBridge.
Technical Depth
- Expert‑level understanding of agentic architectures: orchestration, inter‑agent communication, state and context management.
- Strong experience with evaluation frameworks, retrieval systems, model behaviour analysis and production observability for AI systems.
- Comfortable working across the full stack — infrastructure, services, and AI layer — to ship end‑to‑end solutions.
- Stays current with the fast‑moving AI landscape and is genuinely excited about being at the forefront of what's possible.
Ways of Working
- High agency IC — owns problems end‑to‑end without waiting for direction.
- Comfortable in a small, fast‑moving team where the scope of your impact is large and visible.
- Collaborative and generous with knowledge — raises the technical capability of those around you.
- Interested in the commercial and product context of the systems you build, not just the engineering.
The Role in Context
You will report to the Head of AI and work alongside a small team of Backend Engineers in building and maintaining Chip’s AI Platform. You will also work closely with the product teams who are building customer‑facing features on top of your platform, as well as stakeholders across the business on internal AI‑driven opportunities.

Friday: 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM
