The China-Britain Business Council (CBBC) is the UK’s national business network promoting trade and investment with China.

Since 1954 we have acted as the independent voice of business, located at the heart of the action, engaging across both countries in every sector and region.

CBBC supports our members and partners by delivering the advice, analysis and access which they need to seize the China opportunity.

Our diverse membership includes the UK’s leading companies and universities, dynamic UK SMEs, and a growing number of Chinese companies exporting to and investing in the UK.

We are seeking a talented, creative and dynamic individual to lead CBBC’s events in the UK.

The role will entail managing a varied and large number of events designed to promote UK-China trade and investment, and to continuously grow and bolster CBBC’s core offering of helping UK companies develop a deeper understanding and connection with China.

The role requires an energetic team player with event management experience and excellent communication skills.

Key Responsibilities

The successful applicant will be responsible for planning, budgeting, and execution of events and marketing the opportunities to reach our target audience.

You will also work with colleagues from across the organisation to ensure the events’ programme is organised and developed effectively.

  • 1. Strategy & Leadership
  • Develop and deliver CBBC’s annual events strategy aligned with our objectives and member engagement priorities.
  • Provide strategic input and timely update to the executive leadership team on event programming, member needs, and market opportunities.
  • Oversee the annual events calendar, ensuring a balanced mix of flagship conferences, member events, commercial programs, and policy forums.
  • 2. Event Planning & Delivery
  • Design and deliver high-quality conferences, forums, and member events.
  • Ensure content aligns with policy and member priorities.
  • Manage logistics, budgets, contracts, and vendor relationships, responsible for end-to-end delivery of all CBBC events.
  • Oversee event branding and messaging to maintain consistency with CBBC’s positioning.
  • Work with internal and external stakeholders to develop sponsorship and partnership strategies
  • Build and maintain relationships with sponsors and partners.
  • 3. Member & Stakeholder Engagement
  • Work closely with the membership team to enhance engagement and retention through targeted event programming.
  • Represent CBBC at industry events and with key stakeholders.
  • Gather feedback and use data insights to continuously improve event quality and relevance.

The Director of Events will work closely with our teams across the UK and China as well as external partners.

Specific Requirements

The ideal candidate will have

  • 5+ years’ experience in event management.
  • Proven record of leading meaningful conferences and corporate events from strategy to delivery.
  • Experience in budget management, sponsorship development, and stakeholder management.
  • Strong strategic planning and project management abilities.
  • Team player with excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, and high attention to detail.
  • Skilled in contract negotiation, vendor management, and operational logistics.
  • Commercial mindset with ability to drive revenue through sponsorships and partnerships.
  • Knowledge of current trends in hybrid and digital events.
  • Self-motivated and willing to be flexible on working hours.
  • Collaborative, diplomatic, and comfortable engaging at senior levels.
  • Highly organised, calm under pressure, and detail-oriented.
  • Strategic thinker with creativity and adaptability.
  • Some understanding of the UK-China trade and investment relationship is useful but not essential.
  • Mandarin proficiency is preferred but not essential.
