The Medical Director of the Pediatric Health Network (PHN) provides strategic and clinical leadership for the PHN. The PHN is Children’s National’s clinically integrated network which includes primary care providers and subspecialists in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia. The PHN Medical Director leads clinical integration strategy to advance high-quality, coordinated, and cost-effective pediatric care while meeting performance expectations of value-based contracts, hospital system priorities, and community health needs. The PHN Medical Director serves as a clinical bridge between community and employed pediatricians, hospital-based subspecialists, and health system leadership.

What You’ll Need:

  • Minimum Education: Medical Doctor (M.D.) MD or DO, prefer some level of active practice. Pediatrics residency training in accredited program. MBA Master of Business Administration, Master of Health Administration or Master of Public Health preferred.
  • Minimum Work Experience: 7 years clinical pediatric experience, 5 years experience with quality improvement and data analytics. Experience in clinically integrated networks, accountable care organizations, population health, and/or value-based care (preferred).
  • Required Skills/Knowledge: Deep understanding of evidence-based pediatric care, preventive care, and chronic disease management. Credible, respected, and trusted clinician with previous practice or committee leadership experience. Understanding of pediatric practice operations and hospital-based services. Understanding of the provider landscape, as well as areas of opportunity and strength within the network of physicians. Ability to motivate and guide change in complex pediatric health systems. Skill in building consensus among diverse clinical stakeholders. Strong understanding of value-based care and population health foundational elements. Excellent interpersonal skills for engaging physicians, practice leaders, health system leaders, and PHN Board members. Ability to communicate complex clinical and operational concepts clearly. Experience interpreting pediatric quality metrics and utilization data. Skill in data analysis to identify trends, translate insight into action, and drive performance improvement.
  • Required Licenses and Certifications: Valid, active physician license in DC, MD or VA. Board certification in pediatrics required. FACHE or other physician leadership credential preferred.

Functional Accountabilities:

  • Clinical and Administrative Leadership: Shape and implement the PHN’s clinical integration strategy in alignment with the health system’s mission and strategic priorities and the current regional pediatric healthcare market. Lead development of integrated care pathways that span primary care, subspecialty care, behavioral health, and hospital-based services. Partner with the PHN Executive Director to oversee PHN operations, performance, and strategic initiatives. Provide clinical oversight for PHN governance structures including the PHN Board and PHN Board committees. Communicate with colleagues, health system leaders, community partners, payers, and regulatory entities to champion PHN initiatives.
  • Quality, Performance & Population Health: Collaborate with the PHN Executive Director to identify pediatric care quality, coordination, and cost-effectiveness priorities among patients receiving care from PHN providers. Lead and manage pediatric quality and clinical integration programs across the PHN. Partner with data analytics teams to optimize data integrity, interpret performance dashboards, and drive improvement health outcomes across both primary and specialty care. Communicate performance expectations and support PHN practices in meeting performance targets for value-based contracts. Lead remediation processes when needed for underperforming providers or practices.
  • Provider Engagement & Collaboration: Build strong, trust-based relationships with community-based and employed primary care and specialty physicians and advanced practice providers. Facilitate collaboration between primary care and specialty teams to reduce care fragmentation and improve care quality and coordination. Lead provider engagement efforts to support PHN participation, adherence to clinical pathways, and performance improvement.
  • Network Development & Integration: Support onboarding and integration of new primary care and specialty practices into the PHN, ensuring consistent standards and workflows. Promote adoption of evidence-based pediatric guidelines, shared care models, and standardized referral pathways. Collaborate with hospital service lines to align outpatient and inpatient pediatric care models and support engagement of specialty service lines in value-based care initiatives.
