Head of Strategic Litigation – an exciting opportunity to lead CPAG’s strategic legal work. The role involves setting strategic direction for CPAG’s legal initiatives, managing the legal practice, and actively participating in high‑profile litigation on a day‑to‑day basis.

Responsibilities

  • Set the strategic direction of CPAG’s legal work.
  • Oversee and conduct public law litigation, including the organisation’s legal aid contract.
  • Supervise and manage the casework of junior lawyers and welfare rights advisers.
  • Provide professional development and wellbeing support for team members.
  • Represent CPAG in high‑level courts, including the Upper Tribunal and, if required, the Court of Appeal or higher.

Qualifications

  • Solicitor – E&W qualified, with substantial post‑qualification experience.
  • Experience in public law litigation and publicly funded legal aid work.
  • Strong strategic thinking and a passion for using law to advance the rights of families in poverty.
  • Capability to supervise complex casework and support team development.
  • Experience working with vulnerable clients (e.g., domestic abuse survivors, refugees, disabled people, children, or young people) is desirable.
  • Knowledge of social security legislation is an advantage.

Additional Information

  • Hours: 35 per week, with core hours, flexi/TOIL policy and flexible arrangements (e.g., part‑time, compressed hours).
  • Salary: Band E 95‑105% (£51,458‑£56,875) plus 5.64% pension employer contribution.
  • Contract: Permanent.
  • Location: London (hybrid working options).
