Under the general direction of the school principal, and under the immediate supervision of a Special Education teacher holding a valid teaching certificate directly engaged in teaching subject matter or conducting activities, this assistant assists in the instruction of disabled students and performs related duties as required.

Characteristics of the Class: The role involves supporting Special Education teachers in elementary and high schools by reinforcing efforts with children with various disabilities, including physical, visual and hearing impairments, learning disabilities, behaviour disorders, emotional and mental impairments, following each student’s Individual Education Program (IEP).

Essential Functions:

  • Assist Special Education teachers with a range of duties such as lifting and positioning non-ambulatory students, providing one-on-one tutoring and personal hygiene services, assisting with orthopedic impairments, daily living skills instruction, accompaniment to swimming pools, medical clinics, field trips, etc.
  • Provide one-on-one tutoring and support for learning concepts.
  • Assist with feeding, note taking, correcting homework and maintaining behaviour records.
  • Attend workshops and service training to update job-related skills.

Marginal Functions:

  • May utilize aggressive management techniques to physically restrain violent students.
  • May administer CPR as directed by the teacher.
  • May operate audio-visual and photocopying equipment.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must possess a valid TASN (NCLB) paraprofessional license from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE). A license may be obtained after completing at least 60 semester hours of college credit or by passing a paraprofessional exam.
  • Good knowledge of the characteristics of students with various disabilities, English grammar and spelling, and basic mathematics.
  • Ability to work with students ages birth to twenty-one (21), follow written and oral instructions, complete basic written reports, and perform CPR (CPR training required by initial employment).
  • Good oral and written communication skills; experience with photocopying and audio-visual equipment is highly desirable.

Physical Requirements: Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds gelegly; 20 pounds frequently; 10 pounds constantly. Ability to reach, handle, and finger objects, talk and hear, and use near and far visual acuity.
