The role of the Clinical Support Worker (CSW) is to support the delivery of high‑quality patient care, actively participating in and supporting registered nurses and clinicians in outpatient clinics. The post holder will undertake a range of clinical care duties within speciality clinics, assisting with minor operations as delegated by a Registered Nurse.

Responsibilities include:

  • Patient preparation for minor surgery, chaperoning patients, assisting with eye assessments and administering eye drops.
  • Helping with personal hygiene, supporting patients to access appropriate nutrition, providing bowel and bladder care, and maintaining privacy and dignity at all times.
  • Assisting both patients and clinicians with service delivery and various clinical duties.
  • Preparing the clinical area for safe practice, ensuring cleanliness and readiness of materials and equipment.
  • Recognising and responding appropriately to urgent and emergency situations.
  • Performing capillary blood glucose monitoring, pregnancy testing, urinalysis, ECGs, and removal of urinary catheters.
  • Assisting in minor operations, preparing surgical trolleys, ANTT, and assisting with eye assessments.
  • Administering eye drops and managing non‑complex wounds with basic dressing.
  • Assisting patients with mobility requirements, positioning and use of trained equipment.
  • Undertaking and documenting patient observations: temperature, automated blood pressure, pulse, respiratory rate, conscious level, height, weight, and oxygen saturation.
  • Maintaining a good working atmosphere and collaborating effectively within a healthcare team.
  • Updating the electronic DCS system and maintaining clinical records.
  • Completing the Care Certificate within the first three months of employment.
  • Using infection prevention and control techniques, including waste management, hand washing, and PPE.
  • Assisting patients with pressure area care and preventing pressure damage, undertaking risk assessments and documenting as required.
  • Transferring patients between care areas or to other hospitals for investigations upon delegation by a registered staff member.
  • Chaperoning patients and supporting their emotional well‑being, seeking assistance from registered staff when necessary.
  • Supporting patients with dementia or cognitive impairment.

Person Specification

Essential Skills: Outpatient experience.

Desirable Skills: Ability to use Electronic Patient Records – DCS system.

Essential Knowledge: Awareness of confidentiality, safeguarding and data protection.

Desirable Knowledge: Basic understanding of infection control and hygiene.

Essential Qualifications and Education: GCSEs – Grade C and above in Maths and English.

Desirable Qualifications and Education: Care Certificate. Previous experience within a health‑care setting.
