Chevron is accepting online applications for the Commercial Analyst position through May 20th 11:59 PM. We are seeking an experienced Distillates Commercial Analyst to join our Analytics & Market Intelligence team within Supply & Trading, embedded directly with the trading desk in London. This role serves as the analytical backbone of the distillates book—responsible for market intelligence, commercial decision support, and strategic analytics across ULSD, jet fuel, heating oil, AGO, and gasoil markets globally. The ideal candidate combines deep distillates market expertise with strong quantitative skills and the ability to translate complex data into actionable trading insights.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain supply/demand balances for middle distillates across key regions (USGC, ARA, Singapore/Asia).
  • Track refinery utilization, outages, maintenance schedules, crude diet changes, and yield shifts impacting distillate supply.
  • Monitor global trade flows, arbitrage economics (pipeline, marine, storage), freight dynamics, and blending opportunities.
  • Analyze location spreads, prompt structure, crack spreads (e.g., ULSD vs. crude), time spreads, basis differentials, and seasonality.
  • Integrate geopolitical, regulatory, and macroeconomic developments into short‑ and medium‑term market views.
  • Coordinate with cross‑commodity analysts (crude, light ends, fuel oil, chemicals) to identify cross‑barrel opportunities and emerging market dislocations.
  • Engage with data vendors, industry consultancies, and market commentators to stay current with evolving market trends.
  • Build, enhance, and maintain Python‑based analytical tools, models, and dashboards that generate trading features and signals.
  • Develop scenario‑based frameworks and stress tests to evaluate trading strategies, blending economics, and storage optimization.
  • Deliver bespoke analytical deep‑dives on market structure, integrated value‑chain dynamics, and structured trade ideas.
  • Support structuring and evaluation of term deals, arbitrage strategies, and inventory positioning recommendations.
  • Translate complex data into clear, actionable market signals for traders and senior leadership.
  • Build and maintain relationships with counterparties, brokers, data vendors, and market commentators.
  • Present market views, trade rationale, and performance summaries to leadership and cross‑functional teams.
  • Collaborate with IT and data engineering teams on system enhancements, data pipelines, and automation initiatives.
  • Work with strategic programs to continuously modernize ways of working and reduce operational waste.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Finance, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related quantitative field; Master’s degree preferred.
  • 5–10 years of experience in refined products/distillates commercial analytics, trading support, or market analysis within an oil major, trading house, or commodity firm.
  • Demonstrated track record of providing actionable market intelligence that directly supported trading decisions and commercial outcomes.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to translate complex analysis into clear, executive‑ready insights and trader‑relevant recommendations.
  • Proven ability to thrive in a fast‑paced, dynamic trading environment with competing priorities and tight deadlines.
  • High attention to detail with a bias toward action, continuous improvement, and intellectual curiosity.

Distillates Market Expertise

  • Deep knowledge of middle distillates (ULSD, jet fuel, heating oil, AGO, gasoil) – supply/demand fundamentals, trade flows, pricing mechanisms, blending, product specs (cetane, cold flow, sulfur), and seasonal patterns.
  • Understanding of refinery operations, process yields, crude diet, cracking economics, refinery margins, and how operational changes impact distillate output and quality.
  • Hedging strategies, derivatives instruments (swaps, futures, options, spreads), VAR concepts, and understanding of how risk tools support commercial decision‑making.
  • Econometric analysis, statistical modeling, demand/supply forecasting, scenario analysis, backtesting, and supply/demand balance modeling.
  • Python (pandas, NumPy), SQL, VBA, Advanced Excel, API integration, Power Query; familiarity with R, MATLAB, or C++ a plus.
  • Power BI, Tableau, or similar tools for creating trader‑facing dashboards, management reporting, and data visualization.
  • Experience with energy trading & risk management systems (e.g., Endur, RightAngle, Allegro, or similar platforms).
  • Proficiency with Platts, Argus, OPIS, Bloomberg, Refinitiv/LSEG, Kpler, Vortexa, ClipperData, EIA, and IEA data sources.

Leadership Experience (Formal & Informal)

  • Prior experience managing or supervising junior analysts, interns, or commercial support staff—setting priorities, conducting quality reviews, and actively developing talent.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross‑functional projects, mentor peers, drive process improvements, or champion new analytical tools and methods without direct authority.
  • Proven track record of influencing traders, senior leadership, and cross‑functional stakeholders through data‑driven insights and well‑articulated recommendations.
  • Experience leading or coordinating during high‑intensity market events (e.g., supply disruptions, hurricane impacts, geopolitical crises)—acting as a player/coach on the desk.
  • History of onboarding new team members, building training materials, or establishing best practices and standard operating procedures for commercial analytics workflows.
  • Active contributor to continuous improvement initiatives—modernizing tools, automating manual workflows, or driving adoption of new technologies (AI/ML, advanced analytics, dashboarding).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience at a major energy company or independent trading house.
  • Exposure to both physical and paper distillates markets, including structured/derivative products.
  • Experience with cross‑barrel or full‑barrel analytics—connecting crude, intermediates, and product economics.
  • Familiarity with renewable diesel, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), LCFS/RIN strategy, and energy transition impacts on distillates demand.
  • Global market perspective—understanding of key pricing hubs including USGC, ARA (Amsterdam–Rotterdam–Antwerp), Singapore, and Middle East.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate remote sensing, AIS/ship tracking, and satellite‑based inventory data into fundamental analysis.
