Our ever-growing practice in the West of Southampton with its rich maritime heritage is inviting applications for a Salaried GP to join our dedicated team.

We are looking for an individual willing to fulfil a 6-month contract, 4 sessions a week, with a view to an indefinite extension to join our experienced team of 7 partners and 5 fellow Salaried GPs.

Main duties of the job

The Salaried GP will provide high quality, patient centred clinical care with responsibility for their own personal patient list. This includes managing ongoing clinical needs, continuity of care, and proactive follow up for patients under their name.

Core Responsibilities

  • Clinical Decision Making & Autonomy - Independent assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning, with responsibility for safe, evidence based clinical practice and appropriate referral or escalation.
  • Blood Test Result Handling - Timely review, interpretation, and actioning of pathology results, including communicating outcomes to patients and arranging follow up investigations or appointments with support.
  • DocMan & Clinical Workflow Management - Efficient processing of incoming clinical correspondence, ensuring actions are completed accurately and within agreed timeframes with support from care co-ordinators, workflow team and GPAs.
  • Patient Consultations - Delivery of face to face, telephone, and online consultations, providing acute, chronic, and preventative care.
  • Record Keeping & Compliance - Maintaining accurate, comprehensive clinical records within GMC standards, practice policies, and local/national guidelines whilst utilising scribe facilities to assist.
  • Team Contribution - Participation in clinical and weekly educational meetings, MDT discussions, and collaborative working.
  • Practice Support - Contributing to practice development, QOF achievement, audits, and quality improvement initiatives where appropriate.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The Salaried GP will provide high quality, patient centred clinical care within the practice, holding responsibility for a defined personal patient list and contributing to the wider clinical team. The postholder will work autonomously, exercising independent clinical judgement while adhering to practice policies, GMC standards, and national guidance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Personal Patient List Management - Provide continuity of care for an allocated personal list of patients.
  • Undertake proactive management of longterm conditions, medication reviews, and followup of ongoing clinical issues.
  • Maintain oversight of patient needs, ensuring timely intervention and safe clinical decisionmaking.
  • Clinical Autonomy & Decision Making - Independently assess, diagnose, and manage patients presenting with acute, chronic, and complex conditions.
  • Initiate appropriate investigations, referrals, and treatment plans.
  • Exercise professional judgement and accountability in all clinical encounters.
  • Blood Test Result Handling - Review, interpret, and action pathology results in a timely and safe manner.
  • Communicate results to patients, arrange followup tests, and ensure appropriate clinical escalation where required.
  • Docman & Clinical Correspondence - Process incoming clinical correspondence, including hospital letters, discharge summaries, and tasks.
  • Ensure actions are completed accurately, promptly, and in line with practice protocols.
  • Consultations & Clinical Delivery - Provide facetoface, telephone, and digital consultations.
  • Deliver evidencebased care, including preventative health advice, chronic disease management, and acute presentations.
  • Maintain highquality clinical documentation in accordance with GMC and practice standards.
  • Team Working & Practice Contribution - Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team, including nurses, HCAs, reception, and administrative staff.
  • Participate in clinical meetings, MDT discussions, and case reviews.
  • Support practice quality improvement, audits, QOF delivery, and service development initiatives.
  • Governance & Compliance - Adhere to practice policies, safeguarding requirements, infection control standards, and information governance protocols.
  • Contribute to a culture of safety, learning, and continuous improvement.

  • GMC registered medical practitioner with licence to practise.

Person Specification

Experience

Essential

  • Experience in general practice or equivalent primary care environment.
  • Ability to independently assess, diagnose, and manage acute, chronic, and complex conditions.
  • Competence in reviewing and actioning blood test results, pathology reports, and clinical correspondence.
  • Experience managing a personal patient list or delivering continuity of care.
  • Strong understanding of safeguarding, infection control, and clinical governance.

Desirable

  • Experience contributing to QOF, audits, or quality improvement projects.
  • Familiarity with EMIS Web or similar clinical systems.
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary teams.

Qualifications

Essential

  • GMCregistered medical practitioner with a licence to practise.
  • Evidence of ongoing CPD in line with GMC requirements.
  • MRCGP or equivalent experience.
