Band 5 to 6 development role for a registered learning disability nurse within the Specialist CAMHS Service as part of the neurodevelopmental pathway. The development role is for 12-18 months with additional training and support; progression to Band 6 after 12-18 months if competencies are achieved in line with development plans.

Location: Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service, Wetherby Youth Offending Institute, York Road, Wetherby LS22 5ED.

Responsibilities

  • Undertake assessments for young people with cognitive, social and communication difficulties as part of a Multi-disciplinary Team (MDT). Assessments may include developmental histories, autism-related instruments (e.g., ADI, ADOS), and other indicated assessments.
  • Engage in MDT processes, contribute to formulation and diagnosis, and produce succinct, clear reports detailing assessment outcomes.
  • Provide psychoeducation to children on the pathway and tailor interventions to needs in collaboration with the MDT and families/support networks.
  • Develop individualised HCP plans following diagnosis and contribute to service development within the pathway.
  • Support and supervise junior staff and student nurses; take charge of the clinical area in the absence of the Team Manager.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with the Community Learning Disability Team, other health professionals, and external agencies; liaise to provide a holistic healthcare package for people with learning disabilities.
  • Support health promotion, ensure nursing records are current and accurate, and ensure medication practices comply with policy and NMC standards.
  • Participate in induction, bespoke training, and ongoing supervision to meet development needs.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Essential: 1st level registration in learning disability nursing or RMN with relevant learning disability experience; Experience of working as part of an MDT; Ability to work flexibly and commute between sites; willingness to travel around the Trust as required; Current UK professional registration.
  • Desirable: mentoring/supporting learners; NVQ D32/33; experience in specialist LD services; working with people who challenge services.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Current philosophies underpinning learning disability.
  • Planning and organisation; good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work therapeutically on a 1:1 basis or in groups; awareness of violence and aggression management.
  • Ability to coach, mentor, and act as a role model; ability to work without direct supervision.
  • Ability to travel around the Trust to fulfil the role.
