A Specialty Doctor in Forensic Psychiatry is required for a permanent, full-time position based at Newton Lodge Medium Secure Unit and Fieldhead Hospital, Wakefield (WF1 3SP). This role provides clinical leadership and supports patient care within a multidisciplinary team.

Location: Newton Lodge Medium Secure Unit, Fieldhead Hospital, Ouchthorpe Lane, Wakefield, WF1 3SP, United Kingdom.

Contract & Salary: Full‑time, permanent, 10 programmed activities per week plus on‑call. Annual salary £63,696 to £102,689.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide clinical leadership to a multi‑professional team and liaise with a wide range of external agencies.
  • Deliver expert clinical opinions and manage complex forensic cases.
  • Ensure compliance with the Mental Health Act and the Mental Capacity Act.
  • Develop and conduct undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training.
  • Participate in research, service evaluation, clinical audit and quality improvement projects.
  • Advocate for patients’ needs and support service development and innovation.

Essential Qualifications & Experience:

  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Full registration with the GMC (or checked eligibility) and licence to practise.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in psychiatry and at least 6 months in forensic psychiatry.
  • Four years of postgraduate medical experience in the UK or equivalent.
  • Approved under S12 or able to achieve within 3 months of appointment.

Desirable Qualifications & Experience:

  • Additional clinical qualifications or higher degree in medical education, research or management.
  • Leadership/management qualification.
  • MRCPsych or equivalent postgraduate qualification.
  • Experience in other specialties such as general medicine, geriatric medicine or A&E.
  • Evidence of independent patient management and service development.

Core Skills and Knowledge:

  • Strong leadership and teamwork with emotional intelligence.
  • High clinical competence using a bio‑psycho‑social approach.
  • Effective time and resource management within a team.
  • Excellent oral and written communication in English.
  • Proficiency in electronic patient records and evidence‑based practice.
  • Commitment to annual appraisal, revalidation and CPD.

Desirable Skills:

  • Proactive leadership and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Experience planning and delivering teaching and training.
  • Successful clinical audits or research publications.
