The Mental Health Care Group has an exciting opportunity for Health Care Support Workers to join our inpatient service for working‑aged adults. Following a recent review of our service and staffing establishment, we can offer posts in all four of our localities (Barnsley, Wakefield, Calderdale, and Kirklees). We provide inpatient assessment and treatment for service users experiencing an acute episode of mental illness or disorder. As a Health Support Worker you will deliver high‑quality inpatient care under supervision from qualified colleagues. The post holder will provide therapeutic support and practical assistance to enable service users to actively engage in their recovery process. You will liaise effectively with service users, carers and other professionals and agencies as required, providing direct physical and psychological care.
Key duties include:
- Support recovery, promote independence and facilitate goal achievement with the nursing team and multidisciplinary team.
- Assist the registered nurse with day‑to‑day care, ensuring holistic needs are met in conjunction with other disciplines.
- Maintain dignity and equality of individuals, providing direct patient care.
- Observe and monitor changes in behaviour, physical condition and social interaction, reporting any changes to the nurse in charge.
- Contribute to the evaluation of care plans by accurately and regularly reporting observations.
Visa Sponsorship:
Visa sponsorship under the Health and Care Worker visa route is only considered if the prorated salary meets the minimum threshold of £25,000, as required by UK Visas and Immigration. For Band 3 roles, only full‑time positions at the top of the pay scale meet this threshold. Candidates will only be considered if they have two years of recognisable service experience. Therefore, sponsorship may not be possible depending on salary increments and working hours.

The post holder will:

- Implement care within established policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines.
- Organise a range of activities, facilitating meaningful engagement.
- Apply basic knowledge of long‑term health conditions to support professionals.
- Perform physical aspects of care (moving, handling, using equipment such as hoists and wheelchairs).
- Assist with verbal/physical aggression using de‑escalation techniques, including restraint or seclusion if appropriate.
- Support personal care duties (bathing, toileting, dressing, meals, appearance).
- Undertake delegated clinical duties (e.g., blood pressure, glucose monitoring, pregnancy testing, observation).
- Participate in flexible rostering, providing 24‑hour/7 day care where required.
Person Specification:
Essential Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Enthusiastic, able to work flexibly on a 24‑hour shift pattern to meet service user needs.
- Diversity/Cultural understanding.
- Knowledge of confidentiality and trust responsibilities.
- Excellent knowledge of service user safety (prevention and management of violence & aggression, moving and handling, etc.).
Physical Attributes:
- A satisfactory sickness record over previous 2 years (subject to fairness and equality of opportunity).
Qualifications:
- GCSE A‑D or grade 3–9 in English and Maths or equivalent.
- Level 2 qualification or working through it, demonstrating competencies at Level 3.
- Care Certificate or required to achieve within 12 weeks of commencement.
Experience:
- Experience providing personal care and related procedures for those with health/social needs.
- Experience working in a caring environment at Band 2 or equivalent level of competence.
