Job Summary

We are looking for an exceptional Band 7 Senior Mental Health Practitioner for the Responsive Adolescent and Children’s Home‑Based Treatment Team (Re ACH).

The role requires a registered mental health professional (e. g., Mental Health Nurse, Social Worker, Occupational Therapist) who remains firmly rooted in frontline clinical work while also leading and inspiring the team.

You will manage a complex caseload, support colleagues, and contribute to the evolution of the service.

The role is fast‑paced, rewarding, and every day is different, requiring collaboration with children, families and external agencies to deliver intensive home‑based assessment, support and treatment.

Location: Fieldhead Hospital, Wakefield – the post is based in the office for every shift. A valid driving licence and access to a car is essential for home visits.

Working pattern: 7‑days per week, shift‑based long days (no night shifts). Mandatory flu vaccination for all staff.

Main Duties

  • Assess children and young people in settings such as A&E, home visits and school.
  • Collaborate with families and carers to implement safety and care plans.
  • Undertake risk assessments and review risk documentation.
  • Act as lead clinician for young people on your caseload for home‑based treatment.
  • Supervise staff and support the team clinically.
  • Deliver training and guidance to the team.
  • Refer to internal and external agencies for young people and families.
  • Serve as shift co‑ordinator.
  • Provide short‑duration therapeutic intervention.
  • Submit safeguarding referrals when required.
  • Support recently discharged young people from inpatient units.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Relevant professional qualification (e. g., nursing, allied to medicine).
  • Post‑qualification training in an identified portfolio (e. g., LD, LAC, eating disorder).
  • Dip SW or equivalent mental health profession.
  • Teaching and assessing qualification.
  • Membership of a professional body.

Desirable

  • Post‑graduate qualification in mental health (CBT, Family Therapy, Counselling).
  • Masters‑level qualification.
  • Formal management/supervisory qualification.

Experience

  • Experience delivering training to others.
  • Substantial post‑qualification experience, particularly with children, young people and carers in mental health or complex care settings.
  • Experience in different cultural contexts and with equality and diversity.
  • Multidisciplinary team working and inter‑agency liaison.
  • Provision of specialist advice and supervision to other professionals.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and guidance for working with children, young people, mental health and safeguarding.
  • Evidence of advanced clinical and therapeutic skills.
  • Experience in assessment, risk management and implementation of evidence‑based practice.
  • Experience in safeguarding children and young people.

The post requires a DCS check under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975. A current UK professional registration is also required.
