Job Summary

The role of health care support worker within this integrated dynamic team is both challenging and rewarding and will involve the provision of high standards of safe and compassionate care.

As part of the healthcare team, you will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the care and treatment programmes of your patients to enable you to instruct, advise and guide both the patient and there/family and carers.

Responsibilities

  • Under the supervision/direction of registered health care professionals/associate practitioner, within a delegated framework for agreed tasks, seek support as and when necessary, in the delivery of psychological and physical care to a defined group of people.
  • Provide the highest standards of safe and compassionate planned care to people that maximises their recovery and rehabilitation potential.
  • Develop and maintain meaningful therapeutic relationships with people; adopt a polite, positive and empathetic approach, communicating effectively and informatively.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the care and treatment programmes of a designated group of service users to enable you to instruct, advise and guide service users, family and carers; adjust within your level of competence and communicate any changes to service users and registered health care professionals.
  • Concentrate for periods of time, depending upon the care intervention/care plan (e. g., following the observation policy, taking, recording of physical observations) and respond to issues of concern appropriately, including tasks that require physical effort and risk/health & safety considerations.
  • Exercise a degree of independence, initiative and judgement, assess situations (e. g., following observation policy) and resolve potential problems within your level of competence.
  • Ensure the care experience is positive, maintain service user safety and treat all individuals with respect, dignity, courtesy and in accordance with the Trust values.
  • Feedback observations to the registered professional/clinical team to contribute to the care planning process; understand the principles underlying care planning to enable the service user to reach an optimum level of function, independence and recovery.
  • Implement care within well-established policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines; organise a range of activities, including facilitating meaningful activities.
  • Apply basic knowledge of longer‑term health conditions, within the remit of care planning, to provide advice, support and feedback to a registered professional.
  • Undertake the physical aspects of care (e. g., moving and handling of service users, use of equipment such as hoists and wheelchairs) with appropriate instruction.
  • Assist in dealing with verbal or physical aggression using de‑escalation techniques, including restraint or seclusion when appropriate to the role.
  • Support service users with personal care duties (bathing, toileting, dressing, meals, appearance) as part of a healthcare team.
  • Undertake a limited range of delegated clinical care duties such as taking blood pressure, monitoring blood glucose, pregnancy testing, observing patients for signs of agitation or distress, removing peripheral cannula, performing urinalysis and removing catheters.
  • Participate in a flexible rostering arrangement providing 24‑hour/7‑day care, as appropriate to the role.

Qualifications and Training

Qualifications

Essential

  • GCSE grades 1‑9 (certificate check) OR functional skills level 1 or equivalent (measured through BKSB).
  • Level 2 regulated health care qualification or equivalent qualification (certificate check) OR equivalent work experience.
  • Ability to demonstrate competencies at level 3 (recruitment assessment centre).
  • Care Certificate or required to achieve within 12 weeks of commencement (on‑job training).

Desirable

  • Apprenticeship level 3 or equivalent (e. g., NVQ level 3 in Health & Social Care).
  • Experience of the speciality area.
  • Willingness to undertake further study.
  • Training
  • Must be willing/able to undertake all appropriate Trust mandatory training requirements and subsequent refresher training relevant to the area.
  • Must be willing/able to undergo job development and training.
  • Demonstrate excellent knowledge of service user safety, e. g., prevention and management of violence & aggression, moving and handling.
