An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full time, permanent Band 7 Inpatient Diabetes Specialist Nurse. The successful candidate will be based in the Diabetes Education Centre at Chesterfield Royal Hospital and work within an established multidisciplinary team of Diabetologists/Endocrinologists, diabetes specialist nurses and dietitians to provide specialist diabetes care to Inpatients throughout the trust including critical and emergency care areas. The role will include working alongside the existing Diabetes Inpatient Specialist Nurse and Inpatient Diabetes Support Worker.
A band 6 development role over a 2 year period with progression to band 7 will be considered for the right candidate.
Main duties of the job- To provide an autonomous inpatient nursing service for patients with diabetes whilst in hospital using advanced clinical skills and knowledge of the speciality.
- To manage the nursing caseload for patients with diabetes, who have multiple and complex needs including complex Type 1 and 2 diabetes, diabetes technologies including continuous glucose monitoring and hybrid closed loop insulin pump therapy.
- To provide education to patients on self management of diabetes at home including home blood glucose monitoring, insulin administration and the potential risks and complications of living with diabetes.
- To take responsibility for own evidence-based practice and implement and add to the body of knowledge that supports nursing practice within diabetes.
- To lead and innovate diabetes related nursing practice, both within the Trust and through local networks.
- To support all staff within the trust on issues related to diabetes management and therapies.
- To actively contribute to and participate in the delivery of Trust-wide multi-disciplinary mandatory training and teaching.
- Current NMC professional registration
- 3 years post registration experience
- Evidence of recent continuing professional development
- Non Medical Prescriber / willing to undertake
- Accredited training in insulin pump therapy
- Accredited in structured diabetes education (e.g. DAFNE; DESMOND)
- Extensive experience as a qualified nurse and working in the speciality of diabetes.
- Working to senior practitioner/expert nurse level as identified in the Integrated Career and Competency Framework for Adult Diabetes Nursing (Trend 5th Edition 2020).
- Experience of initiating and supporting patients using continuous glucose monitoring and subcutaneous insulin pumps.
- Evidence of multi-disciplinary team working and able to work autonomously.
- Evidence of developing and delivering teaching packages to complex patient groups and all levels of health care professionals.
- Demonstrate experience of line management of staff.
- Experience in similar role.
- Ability to demonstrate leadership skills.
- Ability to develop colleagues and effectively impart knowledge to others.
- Ability to prioritise and manage own workload.
- Ability to write reports and undertake presentations.
- Understanding of Evidence based practice and its application in practice.
- Knowledge and ability to undertake clinical audit and the setting of standard.
- Ability to demonstrate knowledge of current NHS initiatives and specific to the field of diabetes.
- Knowledge of the NMC Code.
- Ability to demonstrate a sound knowledge base and competence in clinical practice.
- Knowledge, and understanding of harm free care and patient safety, quality/clinical governance, evidence based practice, patient safety.
- Understanding of current issues in healthcare.
- Evidence of working with outside agencies.
- Ability to work autonomously.
