Overview

We are recruiting a Communications and Media Manager to lead the day‑to‑day communications and media service within the Communications and Marketing Department of Chesterfield Borough Council.

This newly created position will manage a small, talented team and deliver high‑quality, timely, and strategically aligned communications across more than 50 council services.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute cross‑channel content for internal and external communications.
  • Lead media relations, responding to media enquiries and managing complex issues.
  • Advise senior leadership on communication strategy and maintain clear messaging throughout the council.
  • Ensure communication outputs are aligned with the council’s transformation and reorganisation objectives.
  • Provide overall team management and develop staff skills.
  • Maintain an awareness of political and public‑service contexts affecting communications.
  • Operate flexibly, including the occasional evening and weekend work as required by the political nature of the role.

Qualifications

  • Significant experience in communications and media management, preferably in a complex political environment.
  • Demonstrated team‑leadership and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with confidence when advising at a senior level.
