Project Overview: This 3.5-year PhD project focuses on developing advanced simulation techniques to optimise sustainable packaging of granular and complex fluid materials through virtual prototyping. By coupling the open-source software MercuryDPM for discrete particle modelling with oomph-lib for complex fluid simulation, the research creates a powerful framework for fluid–particle interaction. A key objective is to reduce the amount of packaging material while maintaining or improving density, stability, and performance. Virtual prototyping enables design and testing of efficient, sustainable strategies without costly physical trials. Applications span pharmaceuticals, food processing, and construction. The project may also incorporate machine learning for model calibration and optimisation, driving sustainable material handling and packaging practices.
Benefits: Fully funded PhD: 3.5 years, annual tax‑free stipend of £21,805 (UKRI rate 2026/27) with increase each year, tuition fees paid, start October 2026. Home students eligible to apply.
