CHEP Equipment Pooling BV (CEP) is the European assets holding company of the Brambles Group. The CEP Indirect Tax Manager will manage the entity's indirect tax affairs in a highly complex compliance environment, with oversight of VAT compliance in 27 jurisdictions and non-domestic VAT refund claims exceeding €50 million per year. The role exists to ensure robust technical compliance, effective oversight of the end-to-end indirect tax compliance process, timely resolution of issues, and the efficient recovery of VAT.
The successful candidate will combine strong indirect tax technical expertise with proven project management skills to manage multiple stakeholders, mitigate risk, and deliver accurate and timely VAT outcomes across Europe.
Key Responsibilities May Include:- Own and oversee end-to-end indirect tax compliance for CEP across Europe, including VAT registrations, filings, refunds, and regulatory obligations across 27 jurisdictions.
- Ensure technical accuracy and robust governance of VAT returns, EC Sales Lists, Intrastat and related filings, whether prepared in-house or by external providers.
- Act as the primary escalation point for complex indirect tax issues, including cross-border pooling, leasing, and supply-chain transactions.
- Manage and coordinate external tax advisors and compliance providers, and partner closely with Finance, Accounting, Supply Chain, Treasury and IT.
- Identify, assess, and mitigate indirect tax risks, maintain strong audit trails, and manage tax authority enquiries and internal/external audits.
- Drive continuous improvement and future-proofing of VAT processes, reducing manual effort, strengthening controls, and improving efficiency.
- Lead or support tax technology and transformation initiatives, including e-invoicing, digital reporting, ERP changes, and compliance automation.
- Maintain clear process documentation, provide practical guidance to stakeholders, and support wider Group tax initiatives as required.
- University Graduate degree and certified Tax/Accountancy qualification.
- 7+ years experience in Indirect tax role, with experience gained in Big 4/Tier A accountancy firm or Blue-Chip in-house tax department.
- Strong experience in EU VAT compliance, including cross-border transactions and non-domestic VAT recovery.
- Demonstrable experience overseeing large-value VAT refund claims and managing interactions with tax authorities to achieve timely recovery.
- Track record of managing outsourced tax compliance providers, including setting scope, reviewing deliverables, and driving service quality.
- Experience working within complex organisational and transactional structures.
- Solid understanding of SAP-based data extraction and VAT data validation using Excel.
- Ability to operate independently with a high level of ownership and attention to detail.
- Strong communication skills, with the confidence to engage proactively with stakeholders and act as a business partner.
