Chemring Energetics UK is a global business providing a range of equipment based on energetic materials for defence, civil defence, and key commercial customers. Are you an experienced HSE professional with proven expertise in safety, health, and environmental management within high-hazard environments? We’re looking for an HSE Manager to lead our Health & Safety Team, drive continuous improvement, and ensure full compliance with legislation, company standards, and COMAH requirements. This is a key leadership role in safeguarding our people, site, and operations while shaping the future of our safety culture.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure all activities are undertaken in full compliance with HS&E legislation, company policies, and procedures; proactively report unsafe acts or conditions via the Near Miss system.
- Review, improve, and communicate the Safety and Environmental Management Systems (SMS & EMS).
- Provide advice, guidance, and training to all staff on legislative and company Health & Safety requirements, including COMAH and ER2014.
- Deliver monthly reports and bi-annual presentations on performance indicators, issues, and trends to the Executive Team.
- Support the development of HSE policy, strategy, and improvement plans.
- Define and lead HS&E audit programmes to ensure compliance and drive continual improvement.
- Lead investigations into near misses, accidents, and unusual occurrences, ensuring root causes are identified and corrective actions implemented.
- Chair the Risk Review Board and participate in the Change Control Board.
- Co-ordinate the compilation and submission of the 5-year COMAH Safety Report.
- Manage license applications and variation requests to HSE and SEPA.
- Provide leadership, coaching, mentoring, and performance management to direct reports.
- Manage the HSE budget.
- Support Emergency Response and Crisis Management Teams as required, including defining and delivering emergency training and exercises.
- Carry out performance reviews and objective setting for all direct staff.
Qualifications & Experience
- Degree in HSE Management or equivalent.
- CMIOSH / NEBOSH certification.
- Proven COMAH site experience (essential).
- Lead Auditor qualification.
- Train the Trainer certification.
- Strong background in risk assessment and environmental management.
