Chemify is revolutionising chemistry. We are creating a future where the synthesis of previously unimaginable molecules, drugs, and materials is instantly accessible. By combining AI, robotics, and the world's largest continually expanding database of chemical programs, we are accelerating chemical discovery to improve quality of life and extend the reach of humanity. Our Chemifarm facility in Glasgow operates a growing fleet of advanced robotic systems that automate synthesis, optimisation, and library generation. This requires our lab to operate smoothly and efficiently.
The Lab Supervisor is the operational lead responsible for the daily readiness and team performance of the lab support team at Chemify. The primary focus of the role is to provide technical and administrative oversight to ensure the laboratory environment is prepared 24/7 for scientists and engineers. You will lead the laboratory support team, ensuring that high standards of safety and organization are maintained while working closely with dedicated facility and engineering teams to coordinate maintenance and equipment needs. The Lab Supervisor ensures the ready-state of the lab, the professional development of the technical workforce, and the smooth integration of operational workflows across the site.
Key Responsibilities- Line Management: Directly manage the lab support team. You are responsible for their scheduling, performance reviews, and daily task prioritisation.
- Operational Flow: Ensure the team meets internal Service Level Agreements (SLAs) for glassware turnaround, consumable stocking, and reagent preparation.
- Mentorship: Bridge the gap between entry-level technicians and senior coordinators, fostering a culture of precision and proactive problem-solving.
- Site Readiness: Conduct 'State of the Lab' assessments to ensure the environment is fit for purpose (e.g., glass levels are adequate, workspaces are clear, 5S standards are met).
- Inter-team Coordination: Act as the primary site contact for the Facility and Engineering teams; you report issues, coordinate their access to the lab, and follow up to ensure repairs/maintenance are completed with minimal disruption to science.
- Requirements Gathering: Work closely with technical teams (Chemistry/Engineering) to understand their evolving needs and translate those into actionable tasks for the lab support team.
- Daily Compliance: Ensure the team strictly follows COSHH, and general H&S protocols. You are the first line of accountability for safety deviations on your site.
- Audit Readiness: Maintain all site-specific documentation (e.g. training records, local SOPs, waste logs) so the lab is always 'audit-ready'.
- Hazardous Waste Management: Oversee the safe collection and removal of waste, coordinating with external contractors for timely pickups.
- Inventory Stewardship: Partner with the Stores/Inventory team to ensure the site's local stock levels (reagents/consumables) are accurate and replenished.
- SOP Implementation: Roll out new operational procedures and ensure the team is fully trained and compliant with updated workflows.
Education and Experience
- Education: Minimum MSci/ BSc (Hons) in a scientific discipline.
- Experience: Preferably 3-5+ years in a professional laboratory environment, with at least 2-3 years in a formal supervisory/ managerial/ team-lead capacity.
- Leadership Style: A 'hands-on' leader who is comfortable being on the floor, coaching the team, and spotting operational gaps.
- Communication: Excellent interpersonal skills; able to manage the 'push and pull' of competing requests from different technical teams.
- Technical Knowledge: Strong foundation in lab safety, chemical handling, and the basics of lab infrastructure.
Why Join Chemify?
- Impact: You will lead a team of Lab Coordinators and Production Technicians responsible for maintaining and improving the lab space at the first Chemifarm, laying the foundation for how future Chemifarms will operate.
- Autonomy: Reporting to the Inventory and Materials Manager, you will own the lab operations strategy, improve processes and workflows, and have meaningful impact over how Chemify labs run and operate.
- Ambition: We are a Series B deep-tech company investing in world-class infrastructure and tackling problems at the frontier of AI, robotics, and chemistry. You will have the resources, the data, and the mandate to shape how laboratories at Chemify run and are maintained.
