Job Summary Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine: This post provides training in all aspects of Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine. The PICU at St Mary\’s Hospital is recognised for Year 1 of the two-year Grid programme in Paediatric Intensive Care. St Mary\’s PICU is a major referral centre for children with life-threatening medical conditions. The Department of Paediatrics has a strong clinical and research focus on Infectious Diseases. The unit is the Regional Referral Centre for HIV-infected children and receives referrals for complex infectious diseases, including those requiring intensive care. It is also one of London\’s four paediatric Major Trauma Centres and a designated HCID centre for both airborne and contact infections. St Mary\’s PICU works closely with GOSH through the Children\’s Acute Transport Service (CATS), providing an independent retrieval service for the North Thames region. CATS includes consultants and Fellows from St Mary\’s and offers training in retrieval medicine. Children are retrieved to PICUs at St Mary\’s, GOSH, the Royal Brompton, and the Royal London. The unit has 15 beds and admits around 500 children per year, with 80% retrieved by CATS. The PICU has an active research portfolio and current projects include trials in non-invasive respiratory support, bronchiolitis care, AI models for ventilation, sepsis endotyping, and point-of-care ultrasound. The unit is also a specialist centre for high-consequence infectious diseases.Main duties of the job Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Intensive Care MedicineThe Fellow will take part in the daily running of the PICU/HDU at St Mary\’s. They will be responsible for all aspects of intensive care, including airway and ventilation management, vascular access, and the ongoing care of new and existing PICU/HDU patients, while working under the supervision of a Consultant Intensivist. The Fellow will work closely with the multi-professional team and take a lead role in audits, morbidity and mortality meetings, and clinical projects. They will also contribute to the development and review of PICU/HDU protocols.Paediatric Intensive Care Clinical Research FellowOne of the three posts includes 40% protected research time. The Research Fellow will contribute to ongoing clinical studies and may lead projects in their area of interest. They will have opportunities to act as Associate PI for multicentre trials and will gain experience in study design, ethics applications, and basic data analysis. The postholder is expected to present abstracts at international conferences and prepare papers for peer-reviewed journals. There is an active PICU teaching programme including simulation and POCUS training. When working on an early shift, Fellows are expected to work with the long day team, when necessary.
