The Cellular Pathology department at Calderdale Royal Hospital is seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated Senior Biomedical Scientist Expert Practitioner with a focus on quality and patient safety. You will be joining a friendly, supportive team and we encourage further development. The department is UKAS accredited and IBMS approved for training.

The successful candidate will be an excellent communicator with strong leadership skills, HCPC registered, with an IBMS Diploma in Histological Dissection and a MSc in Biomedical Science (Cellular Pathology option) or Higher Specialist Diploma in Cellular Pathology or a Fellow of the Institute of Biomedical Science or relevant experience. Applicants who are currently undertaking the IBMS Diploma of Expert Practice in Histological Dissection will be considered and will obtain a band 7 upon completion of their training and achieving their diploma while carrying out senior duties in the department.

Main duties of the job:

  • Examine, prepare for dissection and dissect a range of specimens commensurate with the appointee’s training and experience along the guidelines set by the consultant histopathologists.
  • Work with the laboratory manager and other senior staff to maintain an efficient and effective department with high morale and standards of in‑service training.
  • Deputise for the cellular pathology laboratory manager if required.
  • Monitor all aspects of the pathology quality management system within the cellular pathology laboratory.
  • Manage training and competency within the Cellular pathology department and mortuary in collaboration with the departmental manager and other senior staff.
  • Oversee all health and safety aspects of the cellular pathology department and mortuary in collaboration with the laboratory manager and other senior staff.

Essential Qualifications / Training:

  • State registration with the HCPC
  • Degree in Biomedical Science
  • IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Cellular Pathology and IBMS Higher Specialist postgraduate portfolio in cellular pathology or MSc in cellular pathology or Fellowship status of the Institute or equivalent knowledge and experience
  • IBMS Diploma of Extended Practice in Histological Dissection

Desirable Qualifications / Training:

  • Management, Quality and Training qualification

Essential Knowledge, Experience & Expertise:

  • Significant recent experience in dissection within cellular pathology
  • Significant recent experience as a Specialist Biomedical Scientist in Cellular Pathology
  • Significant recent experience in the National Health Service or equivalent health care organisation
  • Experience of quality management systems and ISO 15189 standards
  • Active participation in Service Development
  • Supervision and training of MLA, associate practitioners, trainee BMS, and BMS staff
  • Experience of laboratory and clinical audit
  • Knowledge of all areas of the cellular pathology department
  • Demonstrate a commitment to and participation in continued professional development
  • Significant knowledge of dissection protocols

Essential Communication and Relationships (Including Management Responsibilities):

  • Must be organised and have excellent time management and communication skills
  • Experience of leading a team
  • Staff management experience
