Salaried GP in Devon

Chelston Hall Surgery in Torquay is looking to recruit new salaried GPs for 4-6 sessions per week due to planned retirement within the practice. We are a large, forward-thinking GMS training practice operating over two sites. Affiliated with Plymouth University, we are involved in the training of GPs, medical students, nurses, paramedics and overseas doctors and are proud of our dedicated multi-disciplinary approach to patient care. Chelston Hall is a UK visa sponsoring practice.

Main duties of the job:

• We are looking for salaried GPs to work within the existing team, undertaking the full range of services such as duty sessions, triage lists, enhanced access, GP hubs, routine clinics and managing their own list of patients clinically.
• The sessional rate will be £11,000 - £11,500 depending on experience and responsibilities.
• Our team includes salaried GPs, ANPs, clinical pharmacists and a Paramedic for acute visits.
• We would welcome applications from those with a special interest such as menopause / women’s health, candidates who are interested in supporting medical students and Registrars and an interest in quality improvement.
• We offer all salaried GPs a generous induction, including a mentor for at least six months, protected administration time and the flexibility to review these arrangements when appropriate.

Overview of our organisation:

• We operate on an EMIS clinical system together with our neighbouring practices, allowing integrated working for Extended Access.
• We currently use Dr iQ for our online consultations.
• We schedule a dedicated 20 minute break for catching up with other GPs and clinical staff during morning sessions plus further catch up sessions.
• We have weekly clinical meetings and regular learning event meetings.
• We also offer regular national training sessions for clinical staff.
• Indemnity is provided by the practice.
• The practice offers a standard BMA model contract which includes six weeks annual leave plus one week of study leave and an NHS pension.

Job description:

The post-holder will be responsible for managing a caseload of patients presenting with a wide range of health care needs within a primary care setting. They will work with clinical and operational colleagues to deliver a safe, high performing and person centred medical service.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• To provide a comprehensive range of clinical duties as required at our Chelston Hall and Barton sites.
• To undertake surgery consultations, home visits where necessary, and telephone queries from patients and health care professionals.
• Making professional, autonomous decisions in relation to presenting problems, whether self-referred or referred from other health care workers within the organisation.
• To undertake on-call duties as part of the Surgery on-call rota, where agreed.
• To be part of the Enhanced Access rotas within the team.
• Work within the current ICB policy and Devon formulary for prescribing.
• Work with patients to support compliance with and adherence to prescribed treatments.
• Provide information and advice on prescribed or over-the-counter medication on medication regimens, side-effects and interactions.
• Prioritise health problems and intervene appropriately to assist the patient in complex, urgent or emergency situations, including initiation of effective emergency care.
• Support patients to adopt health promotion strategies that promote healthy lifestyles, and apply principles of self-care.
• Support and manage health needs of patients presenting for family planning or sexual health consultations.
• Support training in the surgery.
• Contribute to evaluated audit, Quality Improvement work and clinical CQC standards within the organisation.
• Assessing the health care needs of patients with undifferentiated and undiagnosed problems.
• Screening patients for disease risk factors and early signs of illness.
• In consultation with patients and in line with current practice disease management protocols, developing care plans for health.
• Compiling and issuing computer-generated acute and repeat prescriptions (avoiding hand‑written prescriptions whenever possible).

Person Specification:

Qualifications (Essential):

• Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice and entry on the GP Register
• Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in General Practice / Certificate Confirming Eligibility for General Practice Registration (CEGPR), or equivalent
• Included on a Medical Performers List or eligible.
• Evidence of ongoing professional development
• Strong clinical and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• IT literacy
• MRCGP
• Evidence of other specialist interest /development / training

Qualifications (Desirable):

• Evidence of other specialist interest /development / training
• Understanding of QOF, clinical governance and safeguarding

Experience (Essential):

• Experience of NHS general practice
• Experience of using electronic clinical patient records
• Evidence of working autonomously and as part of a team
• Experience of undertaking audit or Quality improvement work in general practice
• Knowledge of current and forthcoming National Service Frameworks (NSFs) and their impact on primary care services
• Understanding of clinical risk management and clinical governance
