JOB TITLE: 1st Team Data Analyst
LOCATION: Cobham
CONTRACT: Permanent, Full Time
The Opportunity
The Data Analyst will support the Men’s Team by delivering data analysis to the Head Coach and Performance Analysis department, playing a crucial role in producing reports across matches, teams and players to best summarise key insights. They will also support the department’s existing technology & systems and collaborate with others to ensure full operability is maintained.
Key Responsibilities
- Data Visualisation & Reporting: Maintain existing and build new interactive dashboards and reports using Power BI, to enable real-time analysis. By understanding how football and data can integrate, create the best visuals and worded summaries to ensure data analysis is translated effectively to non-data specialists.
- SQL Database Usage: Query Microsoft SQL Server, ensuring efficient data storage, retrieval, and processing. Have a knowledge of coding languages, preferably Python, to further analyse and interrogate data.
- Data Application: Understand the data from key providers (Stats Perform, Statsbomb, Second Spectrum, SkillCorner) to best deliver on ad hoc requests, as well as identifying and translating new projects and ideas from coach/analyst to data specialist.
- Cross-Department Collaboration: Work closely with coaching staff and the Data Analytics Team to translate data into consistent actionable insights.
- Football Systems & Technology: Understand sport specific systems (SBG, Hudl, Second Spectrum, IP Cameras, Drones, Microsoft 365, MacOS, etc.) to ensure operability and best practice within the department. Collaborating with the Central Data and Technology departments is crucial.
- Innovation & Continuous Improvement: Stay up to date with the latest trends in football data analytics and technology and recommend new methodologies to enhance insights delivery.
What you will bring to the role
- Bachelor’s or higher degree in a sports or quantitative field (Sport Science, Analysis, or related / Statistics, Data Science, Computer Science, or related).
- Previous experience of working within a professional football club, preferably within a Performance Analysis department, with proven experience of data analysis.
- Strong proficiency in Power BI and Microsoft SQL Server.
- Able to write code, in R/Python, to create custom visuals and interrogate data.
- Experience operating on and building from large datasets.
- Ability to translate complex data into meaningful insights for non-technical stakeholders.
- Knowledge of football analytics and technology including data and systems providers.
- Strong problem-solving skills, including technology-based issues, and attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills within a high-performance environment.
- Willing to work unsociable hours, around the football schedule, to ensure timely delivery of insights throughout the season.
