The predicted salary is between 36000 - 60000 £ per year.

Management:

  • To be responsible for the provision of nursing care on the ward.
  • Recruit and retain a workforce qualified to meet the needs of the patients in that area.
  • Manage ward staffing day to day to ensure effective use of resources, including responsibility for duty rotas, annual and study leave, bank and agency usage.
  • Ensure that all staff undergo an annual performance development review and have a personal development plan (PDP).
  • Collate all staff PDPs to identify and plan the educational needs of the area.
  • Identify and investigate any issues of conduct, discipline and performance within your team, in accordance with trust policies and procedures.
  • Maintain the area budget (pay and non-pay) within the agreed budget and report any deviations.
  • Maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors, students and staff, reporting and taking appropriate action on any hazards or incidents.
  • Collect data and provide essential information as requested by the directorate and trust management teams.
  • Ensure safe custody and administration of drugs in accordance with Trust policies.
  • Ensure the team is aware of trust policies and procedures and disseminate any changes in a timely manner.
  • Participate in meetings and project work as identified and delegated.
  • Deputise and act up for the Matron if required.
  • Investigate and respond to complaints in a timely manner.
  • Monitor all incidents within the clinical area and manage any changes in practice identified through incident reviews.

Clinical/Professional Role:

  • Act as a role model of expert clinical practice in the specialty.
  • Participate in direct patient care and work closely with carers and relatives.
  • Obtain patient and relative feedback to ensure excellent standards of care.
  • Maintain high standards of nursing documentation and audit documentation.
  • Work in close liaison with other members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Promote the development of evidence-based practice on the ward.
  • Ensure high standards of care are given to all patients, monitoring this through spot checks and clinical quality indicators.
  • Advise patients on health promotion and illness prevention.
  • Liaise with other departments to ensure services supplied are of an acceptable standard.

Educational Role:

  • Identify educational needs of all staff through regular appraisal and review.
  • Be aware of the educational needs of student nurses and ensure preceptors and assessors are available.
  • Responsible for the orientation and development of new staff, including allocation of a preceptor.
  • Ensure the ward maintains a sound learning environment for all students.
  • Organise and participate in educational activities within the clinical area.

Person Specification:

  • Education and Qualifications: Registered Nurse, post-registration education in relevant specialty, completed or willing to undertake management/leadership qualification.
  • Experience: Senior level experience, team management and development experience, recruitment, selection and retention experience.
  • Skills and Knowledge: Demonstrable leadership skills, change management skills, knowledge of clinical governance, research and audit skills.
