What does a Lead Creative Designer do at Busuu?

We are looking for a Lead Creative Designer to take ownership of the creative design function at Busuu. You will be working within the wider marketing team to create assets that deliver impact and brand recognition with our audiences. You will be instrumental in leading the creative design team to deliver results for our campaigns across our organic and paid channels. This role also works closely with the Product designers to ensure consistency and brand impact across all touchpoints.

The Lead Creative Designer will be responsible for developing new and innovative concepts and designs that increase brand engagement and conversion metrics, improving the efficiency of our marketing.
You will work closely across the business with our Marketing, Product and Education experts to ensure brand consistency and creative impact throughout.

You will be part of a diverse and cross-functional team whose work will positively impact the lives of millions of people – inspiring them to learn together with Busuu.

What you will be doing

Lead and inspire the creative design team, providing line management for our in-house designers and resource management and direction for our design freelancers

Your fresh and inspiring ideas will be applied to our campaigns to help build our brand and engage our audiences, leading to conversion

Apply your creativity and your commercial acumen to deliver creative solutions to briefs, both in terms of ideation and resource management

Work closely with the rest of the business to understand and drive OKRs by providing creative solutions with demonstrable impact

Oversee the design team’s workload, working with the rest of the business to ensure design work focuses on projects that deliver impact against wider goals

Be commercially-minded in your execution, including by initiating creative tests and hypotheses on how to optimise the impact of creative on campaign results

Have ownership of our design system and brand guidelines, ensuring our brand book and templates are kept relevant and refreshed as needed

Hands on graphic design work on day-to-day design tasks, projects and campaigns, artworking final designs, localising and rolling out marketing design assets

Work closely with the Creative Strategy Director to ensure the briefing and feedback process is running smoothly for both the design team and internal stakeholders

Lead cross-team design and creative sharing sessions to help drive consistency of the brand experience across marketing and product

Work across paid and organic digital channels including email, in-app, social media, ASO, SEO and display and occasionally create branded merchandise & materials for events & team activities

Work closely with Product Designers to ensure consistency across marketing and product

What we’re looking for in a Lead Creative Designer

5+ years experience leading design teams (with a marketing, advertising or branding focus); experience in a tech or product-led environment a plus

You will be a well versed all-rounder: a confident graphic designer, with a solid understanding of design principles and how they can be applied to ensure both brand consistency and drive engagement

Strategic and focused on the bigger picture, with a desire to understand the business needs and how design can support in driving impact and meeting goals

Demonstrable experience working collaboratively with diverse stakeholders to deliver creative value for the business

Confidence to explore new creative approaches to our projects and to challenge ‘good enough’ thinking

Empathy and demonstrable stakeholder management skills – understand and navigate the challenges of internal teams and see opportunities within the business

Commercial acumen and a keen interest in staying up to date with the changes in the marketplace and the competitive landscape

Well versed in Figma

Experience using Jira or another scrum-based ticketing system to manage workflow

Illustration, UX, UI or Motion design experience working on vector animations are not essential, but are all a plus

Excellent communication and presentation skills

Passion for language education and digital learning is always a plus

Experience working in an international context, with localisation teams and adapting designs to different locales is a plus

Experience with creative testing to drive marketing response is a plus
