Checkout.com is seeking a talented Legal Counsel with a strong regulatory and product background to join our Legal team. The Legal Counsel will be expected to advise on compliance with financial services and payments regulations, interact with regulators, and assist in the implementation of broader regulatory projects across the Checkout.com group.
Responsibilities:
- Partner with our Commercial, Product, Treasury, Financial Partnerships, and Compliance teams, acting as a real-time legal advisor to understand their needs and help find creative solutions to achieve business objectives.
- Support relationships with regulators on license-related matters, including potential de novo applications.
- Review payments product structures, flows, and terms to ensure compliance with legal requirements.
- Advise on payments regulatory matters, including compliance with payments laws and related regulations across our different jurisdictions.
- Advise on broader regulatory requirements applicable to financial institutions, including with respect to group regulatory change projects.
- Advise the business on market expansion, researching and evaluating new territories and applying for new licenses or expanding the scope of existing licenses.
- Advise key business functions on new regulatory developments impacting our operations, products, and contractual commitments.
Qualifications:
- Qualified solicitor/lawyer (3-7 PQE) with strong post-qualification experience either in-house or in private practice.
- Strong understanding of legal principles applicable to payments, including the payments ecosystem and payments regulatory and licensing strategy/execution, and to broader financial institutions.
- Previous FinTech, start-up, payments, and/or financial institution experience is desirable but not essential.
- Excellent time management skills and experience managing a diverse workload and competing stakeholder demands.
- Ability to handle and deliver on numerous high-priority projects concurrently.
- Comfort with ambiguity, constant change, and a fast-paced culture.
- A practical, solutions-oriented focus to solving legal challenges.
- Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively as needed, flexing the approach as the matter requires.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to articulate and explain complex legal issues clearly and concisely.
