Job Description
Checkout’s legal team consists of 44 legal professionals working across 5 offices worldwide. The legal team is an integral part of Checkout, providing support and advice to every aspect of Checkout’s business, from designing cutting‑edge new products to negotiating deals with some of the world’s biggest e‑commerce merchants. The team is now seeking a Senior Paralegal to join the product and regulatory team (Reg Legal) based in our London HQ, to contribute to the company’s ongoing growth and expansion. As a licensed and authorised financial services firm, Checkout takes compliance with regulation very seriously. Your main responsibility will be to provide assistance to the Reg Legal team and to the business regarding compliance with current and future regulation. Collaborating with all core functions within the company, you will have the opportunity to work on a broad range of projects and play a key role in supporting the company’s growth.
How You’ll Make an Impact
- Drafting, reviewing, and submitting regulatory reports, licence applications, and other filings to regulators such as the FCA in the UK, the ACPR in France and the CBUAE in the UAE.
- Handling correspondence with regulators.
- Conducting legal research on regulations applicable to Checkout subsidiaries worldwide.
- Drafting advice on new products and changes to existing products, from a compliance and regulatory perspective.
- Contributing to internal Knowledge Management and record‑keeping.
- Contributing to the development and/or maintenance of training programmes for Checkout.com colleagues and participating in the delivery of internal training.
- Flagging new legal developments and considering their impact on Checkout.com.
What We’re Looking For
- A Law Degree (LLB), Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) or equivalent legal qualification.
- 3–5 years of prior experience as a paralegal working on financial regulation.
- A sound understanding of financial services regulation.
- Strong organisational, communication and time‑management skills.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- The ability to work effectively under pressure and to tight deadlines.
- A proactive and independent approach to working in a fast‑paced environment.
- Responsibility and the ability to handle a large workload.
- Excellent judgment, quick thinking and agility.
- Open‑mindedness, comfort with unpredictability and a willingness to accept new challenges.
Preferred (but not required)
- Proficiency in French.
- Direct experience in an authorised fintech (such as a payment institution, e‑money institution or neo‑bank), or at a law firm with a strong regulatory practice.
- Demonstrable understanding of the UK and EU regulatory landscape for Payment Services Providers, including core concepts of the Payment Services Regulations (PSR) and Electronic Money Regulations (EMR).
- Experience of Consumer Duty compliance in the UK.
