About the role
The Transport Manager will oversee the day-to-day transport operation, working with the transport supervisor ensuring efficient fleet utilisation and full legal compliance. You will lead a dedicated transport team of circa 15 van drivers and multiple external carriers, driving high standards, safety, and delivery performance across the Active Fire Division.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, manage, and continuously improve Checkfire’s and PJ Fire’s transport operations across own-fleet vehicles and external carriers.
- Ensure full compliance with all UK transport legislation, including Operator’s License, driver hours, vehicle maintenance, insurance and Health & Safety requirements.
- Oversee driver management, training, and performance, promoting a strong culture of safety and professionalism.
- Manage relationships with third-party transport providers, ensuring service levels, cost control, and compliance standards are consistently met.
- Plan and optimise delivery schedules and routes to maximise efficiency and customer satisfaction.
- Monitor and report on key transport KPIs — including delivery performance, fleet utilisation, and cost efficiency.
- Ensure timely servicing, inspection, and record-keeping for all fleet vehicles.
- Collaborate with warehouse, customer service, and sales teams to align transport operations with business priorities and customer needs.
- Oversee transport budgets, forecasts, and cost management initiatives.
- Investigate and report on incidents, delivery issues, and compliance breaches, implementing corrective actions as required.
- Champion continuous improvement and innovation across all logistics functions.
Requirements
- Proven experience in a Transport Manager or senior logistics management role.
- Strong working knowledge of UK transport and driver compliance requirements.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and people management skills.
- Sound understanding of logistics systems, route planning, and fleet management software.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
- Customer-focused mindset with an emphasis on reliability and service quality.
- Experience in managing a circa £2M transport budget.
Education/Experience required:
- CPC in Road Haulage Operations (desirable).
- Experience managing a mixed transport model (own fleet and third-party providers).
- ILM Level 3 or above (desirable).
- Full driving license.
- IOSH/NEBOSH Health and Safety.
